Back in the late 80s when I was a 12 yo kid growing up in the ready to croak Soviet Union, my buddy and I decided to sign up for some martial arts classes conducted by a retired Spetsnaz guy. I recall how grueling the exercises were and how sore I was for days thereafter. We were all kids around 12 to 14 in the class. The Spetsnaz guy was actually very nice but very strict at the same time. One thing that stood out was the knifes. There were several knifes that we had to exercise with and the knifes were real and super sharp. I remember one kid accidentally dropping it and it went down into and got stuck in the floor just from the gravity force. The Instructor's reasoning was that training with real knifes would prepare us psychologically for a real life encounter where we wouldn't be put off by the danger of a real knife threat. When I mentioned the real knifes to my mom, my martial arts class with the Spetsnaz guy were immediately cancelled lol. So, honestly, considering how the retired Spetsnaz guy treated us 12-14 yo kids, this video depiction of the actual training with adult guys seems legit ha ha. Our Spetsnaz guy was not abusing us though - he was very strict but also very nice and supportive, we had a lot of respect for him.

I’ve met an actual Spetsnaz, and he said it was extremely tough. They would punch your gut. But this brutal? Nah, I don’t think it’s like that now a days. Soldiers are too valuable an asset, even those that failed spetsnaz.

My father was in the portuguese army, before 1975 and he was a regular soldier, one part of the training was going trough the obstacle course and the sargeant started shooting live ammo in their direction.
