Ultrasound Tutorial: Appendix/Appendicitis | Radiology Nation

Learn a technique for ultrasound imaging of the appendix. We will also review the classic ultrasound appearances of appendicitis.

Here are some additional tips courtesy of Andrew Trout, MD:
1. Push harder (need to displace gas)
2. You are not done until you have done a sweep of the deep pelvis to look for fluid, inflammation, collections
3. Change the bladder if you cant find the appendix - if it's full, empty it, if it's empty, let it fill
4. The bladder can be used for counter pressure - if the caecum or appendix are down in the pelvis, pressure on the left side of the bladder with your left hand can lift them out of the pelvis into the RLQ
5. For the retrocecal appendix, creep out to the right flank or position left lat decubitus

This is the hardest ultrasound to be done I'd rather do other jobs the appendix isn't meant for purpose and scanning I swear to God

Ugggghhh, Appendix ultrasounds are so hard! I can actually see mine really well but mine is very low in the abdomen. Most I have done I have not been able to find unless something is wrong but I do want to learn the right way to even see a normal appendix, this was helpful but the whole bowel thing is tricky, I can make up normal appendix looking areas after looking for a bit!

I work nights at a hospital, my coworker was looking for my appendix just to practice. I brought up this video while she had my stomach coated in jelly, probe on my belly, and was watching this and unable to find it because appendixes are a bit tricky to find if they aren't acting up. We gave up the video didn't help. Nice video nonetheless.

One of the exam i hate doing is appendix and to find out ureteric calculus specially with obese pateint my poor arm hurts whole day
