Green eyes are some of the rarest eye colors on the planet! Only about 2% of the world's population has green eyes!
Similar to blue eyes, green eyes appear green because they have less melanin than brown eyes. This is largely the result of Rayleigh scattering, a phenomenon where shorter wavelengths of light, are scattered more effectively than longer wavelengths. The blue scattering light mixes with the yellow and brown color of melanin to give green colored eyes.

Related movie trivia: In "Gone with the Wind" Scarlett O'Hara had green eyes, the actress playing her, Vivian Leigh had blue eyes. To make her eyes appear green, they attached a strong yellow light to the camera for her closeups. The yellow affected how her blue eyes appeared and the lighting trick worked, she seemed to have green eyes. (This was in the 1930s so before colored contacts.)

I remember sitting in a big eye related conference and a survey question went out to the congregation asking, ”If you could change your eye color to any color you want, which color would you choose?” 70% of the congregation chose green. I am a redhead and as a child i had blue eyes. Later in my 20’s the yellow/beige in my eyes started becoming stronger and after my first child it kind of took over. And the blue never came back. I read hormones especially when pregnant can change the eye color like this. Now my eyes are a light beigey/ green with little bits of blue hidden away.

My father was part Algonquin Indian with very dark eyes, hair, and olive skin. I was born with very dark brown hair and light blue eyes. My daughter was born with dark brown hair and green eyes. Genetics is amazing.

You are absolutely right. Green eyes are not absolutely green. It occurs because of lack of melanin. The yellow and the brown pigments blend together to make the eyes look green. Similar concept occurs in chromatography of colors. The same concept that occurs in physics (combination of primary colors and principal colors).

I have dark eyes and dark hair. When I was a kid I wanted to have green eyes like our neighbour’s beautiful daughter. She was 3 and I was 5. So I asked my mom for green eyes. She told me the only way to get green eyes is to eat green vegetables. And I believed her, eating green vegetables became my only goal in life. I became a vegetarian of course and adopted a very healthy eating habit. Years passed by, I’m 51 and I still have dark eyes. But the true magic is that I look like I’m in my mid 30s. The green vegetables slowed down the aging process significantly. Thanks Mom ❤️ I love you very much even though you tricked me 😁😁😁
