When to upgrade — explained!

Whether it's a phone or a laptop or a watch or a desktop or… a car… or whatever, this is my always advice on when you should upgrade

First, wait as long as you possibly can, forget want, forget YOLO, wait until you really, really *need* to upgrade

And then, when you buy, buy the absolute best upgrade you can afford. Don’t spend dime one more than you really have to, but if you can, think less about upfront cost and more about value over the years.

Then, enjoy the hell out of it with zero regrets, zero FOMO, because there’ll always, always be something new and something next.

And this is yours now.

thank you. Upgrading doesn’t mean age. I have a friend who wants to upgrade his iPhone 11 but it runs as smooth albeit a little bit choppier than my 15, but still fast enough for everyone, he doesn’t do anything intensive, it still gets updates, he doesn’t take pictures, so why should he upgrade? He wants to upgrade because Apple is messing with his mind by calling his phone “old” and such. An example of when you SHOULD upgrade is one of my other friend who has an iPhone X, probably on its last update, The screen is all cracked so is the back, it runs fast enough but getting slower, and the screen literally has red splotches on it making it very hard to use. That is a phone that really needs the upgrade, not a smooth undamaged 11

This is what I needed right now. Was thinking of upgrading my Apple Watch S5 to S7. My watch is perfectly fine and has no issues

The end of security update is my cue that it’s time for an upgrade. I just feel a certain type of way using a device that is no longer receiving security updates.

Yep, my iPhone SE1 can still serve its purpose just fine with its new battery. My iPad Mini 5 is my go to device at home. Great combo!

Facts. I’m still riding with my iPhone 7. In almost pristine condition. Only issue I have with it is the over heating but I can deal with it till apple comes out with the next pro model with Touch ID

I bought a 2018 MacBook Pro in 2018 because my windows laptop had become unreliable for college work. I was on a music course so logic was useful. I upgraded the RAM and storage which helped prolong its life and just finishing university now I look back and don’t regret it unlike my college tutor suggested I would. The only thing I don’t like is the display flickers now so when I am able to upgrade I will. In the meantime I’ll bodge a few external monitors if the screen completely dies.

I look at new tech as a preview of what I’m going to buy in the future. Often when a new product gets enough apps/games to make it worthwhile the price will have dropped quite a bit too. Buying in month 1 is risky because there are often bugs due to companies rushing products out. I usually will sell a product before the resale value drops below $50 though.

My 2012 MacBook Pro still works perfectly, so even though I want the recent models, I’m going to wait…

Wise words Rene. I’m still happy on my iPhone 8 Plus, which I’ve had since launch. As one of the 10% who can’t use OLED due to PWM, I’m torn between the SE and 11 next year

Somethings yes, somethings no. Eg phones work out much cheaper to upgrade yearly in my country. Eg I pre-ordered a $1299nzd Samsung s22, it had a $200nzd preorder discount bringing it down to $1099nzd. It also came with a freebie galaxy watch which I sold for $350nzd bring my out of pocket total to $749nzd, I then sold my 1yr old s21 for $800nzd! I made $50nzd by upgrading from s21 to s22. I do this every year, my personal best is a $450nzd profit!

I agree. on this. I have my 2015 iMac 5K 27" i7 with max graphics, 3TB SSD and 24GB RAM. There is nothing about it that makes me need a new Mac even it's 7 years old.

I upgraded from my mint iPad Pro 2020 12.9 to iPad Pro M1 12.9. It was a waste of money. Full regret!

I find it pointless to upgrade these days, the only thing that would make me upgrade My iPhone would be a battery life that lasts 1 weeks and takes 3 seconds to charge
