How to Fix an Ugly Lawn in 5 Easy Steps

It's easy to fix an ugly lawn if you learn the proper techniques. There are 5 steps to reviving a lawn. The more steps you complete, the better your lawn will be!

All the videos mentioned in this video are on this easy playlist:

Step 1: Proper Mowing - Ensure your blades are sharp, and that you are mulch mowing at the highest height possible with your mower.

Step 2: Proper Watering - You should be watering 1in of water per week. But to know if you're watering enough, do the tuna can test. If you are, and you still see dry spots, use a soil conditioner to allow the water to penetrate the soil.

Step 3: Proper Fertilizing - Want the easy method? Apply milorganite 4 times per year. Boom. Done. No really, you can apply it any time that fits your schedule. Some people like to do it a week or two before every holiday, birthday party, etc, so when family and friends are over the lawn is looking sharp!

Step 4: Killing and Preventing Weeds - This is where most people get it wrong! And it's so easy. The simple method would be to apply Step 1 (crabgrass preventer) when the forsythia blooms (or as soon after as you can). Then use the "ready to spray" weed sprays starting with the one that kills crabgrass, and then moving on to the harder weeds. Just leave a few weeks in between to allow your grass to not get stressed. Easy!

Step 5: Overseed in the fall. After completing Step 4 you're likely to have areas in the lawn with no grass. It happens! But lucky for you seeding in the fall is very easy to do. Some people will just throw the seed down and water it. I prefer applying a layer of peat moss on top. Aerator? Fall is the perfect time to aerate and overseed!

That's all there is to it. You can do this! By this time next year you'll be watching the rest of my videos to take your good lawn to perfection. (Sorry, it's an addiction. The better your lawn looks, the more you'll want to see how far you can go with it!)

Dude...Your weed killing advice was so simple. Thank you grass Jesus for explaining what kind of product to buy in a simple manner, instead of forcing me to get a major in chemistry lol

Man it's so refreshing to see someone on YT who actually knows what they're talking about and doesn't crap on about totally unrelated BS. Thank You I'll be using all your tips and hopefully it'll save my lawn.

Just learnt from this video that it is advisable to fix your weeds during springtime, and wait till fall when temperature start dropping to grow new grass seeds. Thanks for the lecture!

As a Guy who received his B.S. Degree in Turf Management nearly a decade ago and has been working on golf course for nearly 15 years, it's great to come back to watching videos like this to get back to the basics. After establishing fertility programs, daily routines, and general course programs, ti's easy to forget the "how and why" behind why one had put it together. Appreciate your video.

I'm in Northern California where there is apparently no institutional lawn care knowledge. To be fair, we've been in a ten year drought. I've spent hours researching lawn care and though I noticed the Grass Daddy's lawn was not 'perfect' in the video I watched, the video itself was perfect. 'How To Fix An Ugly Lawn In Five Easy Steps' is by far the most articulate of all the lawn care videos I've watched (as well the publishing notes). Many thanks!

Wow, taking care of a lawn is like taking care of your pets. I think the lawn is much more work. Great information... thanks.

Thank you for the concise approach to your video. Can't tell you how many videos I clicked away from because they spent 12 min+ just talking about the types of weeds they had and not actually talking about fixing the issue. Kudos

I use that Weed B Gone all the time, I put it in a big sprayer..love that stuff. I just spray the entire lawn and they go away.

I like how you are still attentive to your kids while making the video. Not putting YouTube before the kids.

I really appreciate this video. I know there are plenty of lawn care YT videos, but this one resonated with me. When my home was built here on Cape Cod, it was built in an area that used to be woods, but was cleared out to build our homes (I live in a Habitat for Humanity home). I’ve tried growing grass, but while I do have some grass, I have mostly weeds. It has been frustrating for me, as a single mom, when I would like some nice grass for my yard. I plan to try out your tips, and see if it helps.

You guessed it right! My lawn is ugly and it pains me every time I look at it.. your video encouraged me to get off my butt and do something about it. You seem genuine and really trying to help instead off showing off your lawn care knowledge and your science theories

Thank you for this video. I’ve been applying everything here and my yard is looking better than it ever has. I live in Alabama and the soil is full of sand and clay. Doesn’t grow readily like up north. These suggestions work.
