I consider myself retired at 56 although I work full-time. I enjoy my work, my colleagues and the ability to go eat out here and there. Simple life, yet fulfilled.

You are totally right, we need to keep active until we die, and at the same time enjoy life, not putting off having fun for retirement

Often when I'm asked "When are you retiring?", I ask back: "Retire from what?".
Now I can add yours: "Retire to what?"
Thank you 👍🏿👏🏿

To any younger people watching this, take heed. I did not have anyone sharing this valuable information when I was coming up. The earlier you can figure out what works for you the better. Take it from me, you do not want to have these epiphanies in your late forties.

I am retiring very soon, and am very excited about the prospect. I really feel like I am not retiring from something, but rather retiring to something. Life can be a difficult journey and retirement is certainly not exempt from uncertainty. It’s been a good ride up till now, and I certainly wasn’t engaged in a job that was my “dream job “. I made the best of it, lived along the way, and most importantly, saved enough money to now have the ability to make some choices. On to the next phase!!

This video hits hard to home. My dream job is kindergarten teacher but the money is super super low. So I recently became a freelancer/blogger and make big bucks, such that I will save up a lot and "retire" in 10-15 years and become a kindergarten teacher.

Retirement means doing what you want when you want. It’s not sitting on the couch vegetating

Thanks for the advice. I went back and forth on do what you love vs. Take job just to pay bills. It's really tough to stick to doing what I love as those high paying opportunities come up to do the less desirable work. Thanks for serving as an example to stick to my guns :)

The goal should not be to retire, but to continuously work towards improving your financial position and overall skillset so that you are able to progressively work towards doing work you enjoy in a context (hours per week, company size, etc) you enjoy. I don't think most people would want to still be working 40+ hours per week at age 70. However, working 0 hours per week will also quickly lead to degradation and depression from lack of purpose. Striving for doing something you enjoy around 20-30 hours a week into your later years seems ideal to me.

Healthy exercise hobbies are especially crucial for sedentary software engineers.

Thank you for sharing your wisdom Stefan. Nobody in my family has really pursued their dreams and they always encouraged me to work a secure job that retires early.

Thank you for the reminder that doing what you love and chasing your ideal lifestyle early on pays off.

A note on higher mortality rates among early retirees: it could really be difficult in controlling for confounding variables. For example, a significant number of early retirees might be retiring *because* of poor health, not that early retirement makes them unhealthy. For example, you have some debilitating disability that makes it difficult to keep working, so you settle for early retirement. As a person with a disability, you are probably already more likely to have an earlier death than average.

It's similar to the vegetarian paradox that vegetarians have slightly higher mortality. But many vegetarians are people who were already unhealthy before being vegetarian, and then were scared into becoming vegetarian because of their poor health, perhaps a heart attack caused by a diet high in red meat; if you try to control for that variable, then it eliminates that mortality gap.

That being said: definitely agree with the thesis of the video that you shouldn't retire to just sit around all day, but to find some productive activity that you actually like to do.

Totally agree, I'm 23 and laded a coding job in c#, first paycheck was straight to retirement fund, the earlier you start the easier it will be later in life. My dad is 70 and still working his karate school and making twice my salary.

Thank you for passing on your knowledge via the mentoring program! You’re providing a much-needed service to those who very much appreciate it.

Absolutely spot on. What a great video. I've followed this approach and have never understood why so many people I know don't. You only have one life. Otherwise, you will resent all those who worked it out much younger than you did as you'll never make up for lost time.

I have an interest in coding, but not a passion. I see how it's applicable to everything and I agree that it's a superpower. But it's your wisdom and practical life advice that I enjoy receiving on a weekly basis. And that is why I keep coming back. Thank you. :)

Sound advice. Also, invest a significant percentage of income along the way through the different ventures of your life in order to facilitate channeling from one endeavor to another.

Money should buy us 2 things: Freedom of Time (Time Freedom) and Freedom of Opportunity.

One important thing about mentoring or helping others is that by helping others you are actually helping yourself in some mysterious way. There must be some fundamental spiritual law behind all this.
