Starting MMOs for the First Time as an Adult

Have you ever been so late to something that by the time you got there you’d missed the best part? Yeah, that was me in roughly 2014, at the ripe age of 26, when I first discovered MMOs...and….well….gaming. I’m not saying I hadn’t gamed before then, but the amount of games I’d actually played were...sparse at best. Today I’m going to take you all on a little journey as we explore how it felt coming into MMOs in my late 20s - what specifically brought me to the genre, and how it felt diving into the world as an adult that was untouched by the world of MMOs.

It seems of late we have a lot of MMOs coming, while some of them are fun, I can tell you now they lack that depth that older more successful ones have even if I played them years after their release. Even the games I loved are squishing themselves down now to be less hefty in areas, to be faster. To cater to the new blood coming in. And in doing so, you lose something about them I think. New games are fast, it’s fluffy, and it’s just not as good. I have high expectations now after my journey, and it’s ok to play games to just have light fun in, but I look forward to that next hefty MMO that drops something amazing. I kind of wish I hadn’t been late to the party, but I’m here now and I’m so thankful for the journey I’ve had and I love hearing your stories of older MMOs we’ve now lost or are empty that you once loved. For now, while I wait, I’m starting a new journey that’s slowly winning me over, console games.

Very rarely do we find a world that we can connect with. Because honestly the writing or time just isn't there, the substance is just whatever and sometimes it feels like they just don't care. And that is heartbreaking. This was a beautiful impactful video that made me teary-eyed. Thank you for sharing.

I didn’t start playing MMO’s until WOW classic came out & I was 45. My son & husband have played since Vanilla WOW but I never joined.I finally gave it a chance when WOW Classic launched & I was the oldest person in our guild & for me, the game was hard. When I first started I couldn’t even figure out how to walk straight, I kept getting stuck.😂 But my hubby patiently helped me through & I complete Classic. We were a little burned out after so many nights raiding so we took a short break & decided to try FF14. For an “inexperienced” gamer, I love it. No more pressures like there was in WOW. & even though I’m older, I’m still having fun & the best part is the time I get to spend doing it with my hubby. Thank you for sharing your story, I loved hearing your experiences!

I was a Nintendo kid and played lots of console games all my life. I'd heard of WoW but never had a decent PC to game on. It was only 5 years ago I started playing mmos.. except they were the mobile versions. Even though they were super cash grabs (and I spent more than I'd like to admit) I still had so much fun I decided to finally get a gaming rig about a year ago now. I've been through GW2, BDO, Blade and Soul, Tera, Lost Ark RU, and now I'm trying FFXIV. Now mmos are all I play. I came super late too, so this story is relatable.. I'm 36.

This video has ineffably encapsulated the way I feel about games as a whole. This was so heart-warming; it made me reflect on my journey as a gamer and how it has made me grown as an individual. Nothing came as close to my heart as video games. Awesome vid Mrs.Stix.

While I wasn't late to the mmo train, hearing you talk about that initial joy of your first mmo and chasing the same excitement definitely hit the feels.

I relate to your story so much. I'm a respiratory therapist and everyone I talk to in the hospital for the most part are way too boring for my taste. No one games, watches star wars, watches marvel, goes to conventions, cosplays, etc etc. All they talk about are their kids, weather, and traveling. Bumping into medical professionals that actually have fun hobbies are rare gems indeed. Thanks for sharing your story!

I played Everquest way back in the day, but it never got me hooked. It wasn't until I played City of Heroes that I was really absorbed into a game the way you are describing. I remember adventuring through Perez Park and randomly teaming up with a blaster that was on the same quest as me. That blaster invited me into their supergroup and I had no idea I'd be finding a group I'd enjoy chatting with enough to come back every day and continue our adventures together. I've still yet to find a group of people that felt so much like family to me, even in FFXIV. I love Final Fantasy, but I haven't connected with anyone on the same level as that supergroup. I'll forever be thankful to that random blaster that I don't even remember the name of anymore.

This might be the best "love letter to MMOs" I've heard. Definitely brought back some feelings of nostalgia. Great video.

This story was so beautiful, I believe most people will open an MMO they love and will get the feeling they got when they 1st played an MMO.

Thank you so much for sharing your story with all of us. It's been quite the amazing journey so far and I hope you are able to continue to enjoy it long into the future. I know you played Guild Wars 2 base game a few months back. Did you and Stix ever end up sticking with it and playing the expansions Heart of Thorns and Path of Fire? Guild Wars 2 still has a very good community and these 2 expacs added a ton of enjoyable features like gliding mounts and elite specializations that are way better then the core classes. AS for someone like yourself there are even a few elite specs that can give you the ability to play healer. If you haven't tried them both out I do highly recommend them.

This is one of y'alls best videos, def top 3 'Ms.Stix' vids.

The future is BRIGHT tho, Ma'am; so many chances for another 'first love' feeling from mmos coming up in the next 1-16 months!

Despite starting MMOs young the feeling of nostalgia exists regardless of when you start, they don't make mmos like they use to!
Good video and indeed we would like more Mrs Styx, your good at story telling.
