Gears were removed way, WAY back in the infdev days, being replaced with redstone in version alpha. By the time 1.0 released people already had great success with redstone.

this is actually diabolical my first minecraft world I buried my pet magma slime (it "died") and it's tomb was filled with gold and diamond. i come back to the world four years later and discover a block i had never seen before- iron on the outside, diamond in the middle, gold at the very center. i saw it that one time and never again- it wasn't in the creative menu, when i went into survival and broke it i couldn't remake it with the materials it dropped. i never figured out what it was until this video. the nether reactor. thank u so much for solving a 13 year old mystery.
