UK Prime Minister Liz Truss has paid her respects following the news Queen Elizabeth II has died at the age of 96 – saying it is a "huge shock to the nation and to the world".

"We are all devastated by the news we have just heard from Balmoral," Ms Truss said.

"The death of Her Majesty the Queen is a huge shock to the nation and to the world."

No matter how old a person is, it is always a shock to me when they die. She was the queen for 70 years and I kind of thought she go on longer. My condolences to the Royal family and to the people of the United Kingdom. She is at peace and with her beloved husband again.

A quick look at the actuarial tables tells you that this should come as a surprise to no one. Be that as it may, it's still a bit of a shock to the system. Love her or not, the Queen was a constant. It's always a little disorienting when a constant is gone.
