The news anchor Huw Edwards said Buckingham Palace had released a statement confirming that the Queen had died peacefully at Balmoral Castle on Thursday afternoon.

The palace had made an announcement earlier in the day stating that doctors were concerned about her health. Members of the royal family travelled to Balmoral shortly after the initial announcement as concerns grew throughout the day.

We knew it wouldn’t be long but to still hear him say those actual words just seems unbelievable. A woman who’s been there for all our memorable lives.

Huw's professionalism is incredible. You can hear his emotions trying to break through, but he keeps his composure and continues to read the autocue. He's a national treasure.

When he said, “The King, and Queen Consort…” it was like getting hit with the reality of it all. One is so used to having a Queen on the throne. This is just incredibly odd.

She was ninety-six, and still, a _British_ newsreader is on the verge of tears.
This is how much she meant to us.

May she rest in eternal peace. A real ‘where were you when’ moment.

Wild to think he's carrying a phone with contacts to a CP dealer during this video

Her reign has covered 30% of the time the US has existed, 14 Presidents have travelled to meet her, she oversaw the transition of the British Empire into the Commonwealth of Nations. She was a remarkable woman, a constant in our lives and she will be missed.

Didn't think she'd die this year, it felt like she'll live longer. Yet here we are. Rest in Peace to the Queen.

It couldn’t have been a better presenter to announce it. He has such a gentle way about him.

70 year reign, the longest of any British monarch. She was a monarch her whole life except for 26 years. Incredible. R.I.P. Queen Elizabeth II.

It's the end of an era. No one will ever command the respect that she had throughout the world. When she spoke, the world listened. Thank you for your service and duty. An amazing life. Rip.

She has been such a constant figure for so long, most people can't remember other british monarch than her. This makes me cry. Rest in peace Queen.

What I think about is she has been the queen for 70 years ... almost everyone in this world has lived their life with queen Elizabeth as queen ... today is truly the end of an era ..

sent shivers right through me. Kind of knew it was coming, but at the same time the information we had was so little you could believe she'd maybe pull through and of course no one wanted her to die. Even Huw Edwards said it here right before the announcement that we were waiting for news on her condition, that she might be being treated, implying we weren't necessarily awaiting news of her death. I even spent most of the afternoon saying it was horrible waiting around and talking as though she was already dead when as far as we knew then, she wasn't and so had a chance of surviving. Even if I was slightly surprised at how frail she looked just two days before and had an odd premonition about having appointed her last Prime Minister. She was so well respected and admired, we couldn't imagine life without her guidance and wit.

A rather strange feeling I have now... I am not British, but Her Majesty has been the epitome of Britain throughout my life. She was a symbol of Britain and her image was inextricably linked to Britain for decades to the 90% of the world’s population. I offer my condolences to all the subjects of Her Majesty. She was a respected monarch, a worthy woman and lived a beautiful and long life

I am not a monarchist, yet I have been deeply moved by the Queen's death. I am truly saddened. I am 35, so she is the only monarch I have 'known'. We have had a few tumultuous years and the only constant was the Queen. She inspired secureness, which in turn gave us a sense of stability. Queen Elizabeth truly put duty first and for that I am thankful. We had a Queen for 70 years and now we have a King. Rest in peace, your majesty.
