I've heard a few different ideas on what Litten's markings are meant to be. Some say it's the alchemical symbol for sulfur, which is interesting but doesn't really have much basis other than "they look similar and sulfur is associated with fire." I personally think it's just meant to immitate tiger stripes

i was actually going to say that the year of the snake could likely mean “year of reptiles” because around the time the chinese zodiac was created the general representation of a reptile was a snake/lizard (the lizard was more common but not by much)
