So glad you showed that. So many people would have missed it. Cholesteatoma is the one important common diagnosis that we should never miss. I've seen so many complications from people just treating these with drops. Well done!

I had a cholsteatoma on my left ear 2 years ago. I just had a little pain in the middle ear for three days. After 6 weeks or so I suddently became aware of a hole in my ear drum because when I cleaned my nose, air was running trough. I had no pain at all. After another 6 Weeks I finally had a doctors appointment. He looked inside and said we have to handle this fast. 5 days later surgery. The surgeon said it will last around 45 to 60 minutes. After I woke up they told me it took 4 1/2 hours. The couldn´t reach all the inflamed bone fields behind my ear drum so they had to get trough the skull behind my ear. The surgeon also told me that 2 weeks later my hearing bones would have been gone because the infection was spread so deep that it already destroyed my bone material. All that happened without any pain for weeks... I only noticed it because of the air running trough that ear. Now I´ve got a replaced eardrum which was built with tissue from my ear. I just wanted to tell the story. Sorry for my grammar failures and mistakes. I am from Germany ^^

The emotion that came through when you said "Trust me I've tried." Struck me. Hugs. Praying this person gets seen quickly.

As a person suffering for close to 2 years now, I can tell you that it has been my experience that the broken health care system is a multi-layered problem. There are seemingly fewer doctors who truly care enough to deep dive into medical research when diagnosing patients. Instead, they dx the most 'common' issue. If a patient has something 'out of the ordinary' they are likely not going to get an accurate dx, esp if they are single, elderly and/or female (and have no one to advocate for them.) I was exposed to COVID, got a sinus infection followed by 2 ear canal infections (my outer ears doubled in size and had a deformed look, and one eardrum had blood on it. There was also significant drainage of some type.) Then my sinus infection seemed to reappear. Then my left forearm itched and I made the mistake of scratching it...that is when it all went to heck and I have been sick ever since. Ointments (rx and otc) only served to make matters worse. I have also lost quite a bit of weight. If not for my own resourcefulness in battling this, I am certain things would be much worse. I have spent a small fortune going to doctors (one ENT's dx was my red ears were being caused by menopause, which I went through over 25 years ago!) I am exhausted from how I have been forced to live.

P.s.
I also have CHF due a medical mistake wherein I was on a ventilator for 5 days with HA septic shock resulting from HA double pneumonia. Underlying issue was a kidney stone my body passed on its own. Dr wanted to 'look around inside my kidney'...he did..then released me with a wbc count of .9. At home, temp was 104, trouble breathing and dr not returning my calls so I went back to ER (that is when I ended up on ventilator with ICU doctors telling my family I likely would not survive.)

Yes, the medical system in the USA is severely broken (based on my experiences anyway.)

It's always so wild seeing how issues can literally just carve out a burrow in someone's skull. That thing straight up made a nest in there! Love seeing your videos, they're refreshingly straightforward and gentle.

I had a Cholesteatoma, didn't realise it at the time. It went so bad that I ended up having a radical Tympano Mastoidectomy. I'm now deaf in my right ear, and have prosthetics in my right ear to keep things in place, and an extra hole in my skull to boot. Moral of the story... don't let an ear infection sit like I did. I can't walk in a straight line to save my life, I also fall over often. Look after your ears!

The things you find in peoples ears amazes me, so technical but so well explained. Here’s hoping the next stage in the treatment is quick.

It is astounding how that wasn't causing real pain just a sense of fullness 😮 Fascinating video, I hope she gets treatment really soon 😊

Brilliant narration & video, Conor! This is likely the second most interesting case I’ve watched on your channel (right after the patient with the rapid mold regrowth years ago). Best of luck to your patient.

That was amazing, and something I very much doubt any of us had seen before! Do hope that referral gets picked up fast and the poor woman was treated ! Must say, ( although I expect it) I was impressed how so many names of causes and treatments that just rolled off your tongue with such ease, was very impressive! And you give me every confidence in being a very good audiologist (Dr?) and although I’m retired snd too old myself, I’d recommend ANY would be audiology students to book in with you pronto! And learn the right way to do this line of work with someone who certainly knows what they are talking about!! Thankyou for that extremely educational video!, ! 🙋‍♀️👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🥰🦋💐😘

I'm an audiologist from the US - You were brave to get that close to the drum with that suction! But good catch. I know if a general physician at my hospital saw this, they'd likely think the bubble of pus was otitis media until the patient got to us.

You are an astute otolaryngologist and adroit at delicate removal of infectious materials near such delicate regions of the timpani. Indeed, if I ever had such complex issues of the ear canal, I want you as my doctor! Bravo old chap!
