- Steve actually was moving downstream, the picture just makes it look static
- the dog was mid-jump

You're dang right I might need math in Minecraft. Just the other day I used a little trigonometry to calculate the EXACT location of a stronghold from a couple of Ender Eye throws. Needless to say I was pretty proud of myself for that

My first reaction to the question, what's wrong with the dog, was that the dog is still alive.
Pets don't want to stay alive in Minecraft. My cats keep on drowning themselves for example or put themselves between me and an enemy to get hit by my sword. In the past, my dogs kept on walking into fire or even lava, if they didn't off themselves with fall damage first. Minecraft's mob AI is... special.

You should focus on the foot/paw placement rather than the tail, because the tail isn't touching the ground.

Also overlooked here: the mangrove swamp and the desert are both hot biomes, so they both spawn the white frogs. There’s no logical reason why any orange frogs are present in the picture.
