Why You Should Always Soak Almonds Before Eating Them

Almonds are a tremendously healthy food that are packed with a wealth of healthy vitamins, minerals and nutrients. This includes fibre, protein, vitamin E, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc, calcium and healthy fats. Anyway you eat them, almonds will provide health benefits and nutrients to you, but soaking them before consuming them can help you obtain even more benefits from them. Lets discuss why you should try soaking almonds before consuming them and the benefits of doing so.

Eating almonds and other seeds and nuts can be hard on some individual’s stomach and digestive system. By soaking almonds, it allows them to digest easier. When they are better digested, we can fully gain the health benefits and nutrients almonds can provide. Dry almonds contain enzyme inhibitors that are found in the skin, such as tannic acid, which protect the nut prior to germination. Tannin can inhibit the absorption of nutrients in our bodies. Once we soak the almonds, the skin or coat of the almond comes off, which allows for the better release of nutrients in the stomach. Our stomach enzymes can now work more freely to allow the maximum absorption of nutrients once the soaked almonds are consumed.

Also, by eating soaked almonds first thing in the morning, it can help regulate hydrochloric acid in the stomach. This better helps to keep your acidity levels in check and promotes protein digestion through out the day. As well, soaking almonds allows for the break down and neutralization of phytic acid which is found in them. The phytic acid is found in the outer layer of the almond and can combine with vitamins and minerals, such as magnesium, copper, zinc and iron, and block their absorption. This again allows for better absorption of the vitamins, minerals and nutrients found in almonds.

Lastly, soaking almonds can also have other benefits for our bodies, such as increasing the amounts of B vitamins found in them, allowing the protein in almonds to be more readily available for absorption and can help with the prevention of mineral deficiencies and increase our daily fibre intake.

To soak your almonds, place raw almonds into a deep enough bowl so that they can all be submerged in the water. For every 1 cup of almonds, pour in about 2 cups of water. Try to use filtered or bottled water as not to change the flavour and taste of the almonds. If the almonds are not fully covered, add more water. Leave the almonds to soak overnight for about 6-12 hours. This does not have to be done in the refrigerator. Once the time has passed, drain and rinse off the almonds. You can eat the almonds immediately or store them in your fridge for later. It is normal for the skin of the almonds to come off. You can eat them with or without the skins, depending on your personal preference.
