Is Gamepass in trouble?
Let’s take a look at the challenges ahead for xbox’s golden goose, and what they can do to overcome them.
So chances are if you are watching this video, whether you’re a fan of my channel or your an xbox fan whose happened upon my content for the first time–you know what the hell gamepass is. But if you’re one of the few that for some reason…dont know? Xbox gamepass is a subscription service microsoft offers, where they offer a library of video games in exchange for a monthly fee. It’s often called the “netflix” of video games because the basic premise is more or less the same except you can actually download the content on gamepass vs just streaming it.
Gamepass is arguably Xbox’s most valuable feature right now. I can probably take it a step further and say gamepass is what saved the xbox brand and enabled this comeback we’re seeing with the xbox series x/s. Sure xbox has made some other really crazy moves like the Zenimax Media acquisition, reaching an agreement with Activision Blizzard to acquire their stuff, but we really haven’t seen the fruits of those labors outside of, you guessed it, adding their acquisitions library’s to gamepass. I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that gamepass is carrying xbox this gen, and it’s gone a long way in narrowing the sales gap against the Playstaion 5 after a gen that saw xbox get outsold over 2:1.
I personally think gamepass is great and alot of ya’ll out there seem to agree, but like all popular things, gamepass has it’s haters. Some pretty notable people have come out and said that gamepass is bad for the video game industry, that it cheapens the value of games. I see alot of people on twitter and social media say things like “i’d gladly pay 70 dollars for a game because I actually like to support developers!” Now this is something I was always curious about, so I reached out to some friends who work in game development and i was like YO do you receive any financial compensation depending on how many copies of the game you worked on were sold? And they were like no. One said they work on a salary but don’t have a bonus clause that gives them a percentage of sales, but that some people they know do. The other friend said they worked as an independent contractor on their last game so definitely no. I then straight up asked them what their thoughts were on game pass, and they were both like “we like eet”. When I was talking to my salaried friend they said it was a great way to try out new games and that they enjoyed it. The only thing negative they had to say was that if they start a game on gp they don’t have as much incentive to finish it because they didn’t pay full price for it. And that sometimes they get choice paralysis. So this thought that game developers hate gamepass with a burning passion, at least in my very very VERY small circle of friends who work in the industry, seemed to be untrue.
Another argument against gamepass is that it’s essentially a money sink, that there’s no way a company can operate a service like that and be profitable. While microsoft may be a big enough company to absorb a hit like that until gamepass is profitable or whatever, some notable Microsoft execs have come out and said nah guys it’s sustainable this thing totally works. Phil Spencer a while back said "I know there are a lot of people that like to write, 'We're burning cash right now for some future pot of gold at the end.' No. Game Pass is very, very sustainable right now as it sits and continues to grow." Of course he could just be saying that right? Like would he truly come out and say yeah guys we’re losing a shit ton of money on gamepass right now.
