According to the official instructions you absolutely need some more space at the open upper side of the Series X.

2 yrs playing xsx, cleaned only once with vacuum when it became slighty louder (without opening) and its just as quiet as new. I just keep it vertically over a meter from the ground.

definitely recommend everyone to learn to take their console housing apart, it’s actually really simple
my series x was starting to collect dust (didn’t look bad at all) decided to do an internal cleaning for the fun of it and it was literally jammed with dust bunnies all over the heat sink, the fan had a decently thick layer of dust that needs an actual wipe down to come off
runs super smooth and quiet now👌

Mine is so quiet that I can’t even hear it. I have to put my ear to the top of it to finally hear the fan. Most quiet console I’ve ever owned.

My Xbox Series X was loud too but when i cleaned it it was then silent!

Played a PS4 and I swear it's not even that loud, it is when you turn it on and it's activating all systems and such, but once it settles in and everything runs at normal speed it's just a quiet hum. I say that as an Xbox guy btw who's barely touched a PlayStation.

Because you’re laying it down so the intake an outtake are both choking on the dusty air at floor level. You need to keep windows open for couple hours a day or better yet get an air duster / purifier to collect particles or a electric dust blower if your consoles not under warranty anymore.
