With an already volatile and very tense situation, the news media needs to be more responsible in their reporting. If you're going to report that the father said that his son had a valid firearms FOID card, then you should take the extra step and tell your audience what a FOID card is and what it means to be in possession of one. Some will jump to the conclusion that it's a license to conceal carry which it is not, and take to the streets in protest based solely on your headline.

For the record, my condolences on the loss of the family’s loved one. As a Illinois resident, a person is not allowed to be outside of their residence with a loaded firearm with only a FOID card.

A FOID card is not a CC license. Separate things. IL does issue concealed carry licenses but a FOID card is not it.
The FOID (Firearm Owner's ID) card, in IL, only allows you to purchase and possess firearms and ammunition in your home, at a shooting range, or while hunting.

A FOID card just means that he's legally allowed to purchase and own firearms and ammunition. It basically just means that you have no felonies on your record, no domestic violence convictions, no restraining orders, and you're not a mental defective. It's not a concealed carry permit. So, if he was carrying a gun and had a valid FOID card, he was illegally carrying.

I'm not in favor of FOID cards and believe that the 2nd amendment is everyone's concealed carry permit. I'm just saying that him having a FOID isn't evidence in his favor here.
