Another solid review! The SP8 sure looks interesting and I agree with you, would have been better if they waited and launched it with 12th gen CPUs. Microsoft seems to always do this with their surface devices.

Good to see you talking about fan noise. My first Surface device was the Surface Pro 4. It was an i7 and the fan noise used to drive me nuts.

So when I got the Surface Pro 6, I opted for the fanless i5 model. It gets ridiculously hot, but I love that it doesn't have any fan noise.

Great to see that the speakers and webcams are still high quality.

I think I'll wait until the Pro 9 to as the new efficient 12th gen Intel CPUs could make a huge difference.

I agree with what everyone else says, the real bug bearer is the dire battery life, 5 hrs if you are lucky and 3 hrs if you are using it at 120 hertz refresh rate. When will Microsoft stop over exaggerating the battery and do something to extend it.

It's really nice to see that Microsoft is focusing more on speakers. Comparing MacBooks and iPads to pretty much anything else there's no competition imo, but it's really tough to add a marketing bullet point for great sound. Manufacturers have tried partnering with different brands but they all sounded pretty mediocre

Just bought a SP4 Pro 128/4gb with keyboard from eBay from a certified Microsoft refurbisher for £144, and im actually amazed by this little machine, where have I been all this time, it's got me looking at upgrading already to a newer one thinking if this SP4 is still so great then what about the newer ones, but the newer ones even the 6 still want like £600 + so I think I'm good for now, this will be used as a light use machine and even a second one next to main pc for light tasks or note taking etc. The SP8 is tempting if it was £999 for a 512/i5 with keyboard then I think Id buy one but Microsoft prices are crazy makes me think my £100 SP4 is the bargain of the century, might have to sell the t440p too which is another nice affordable laptop, anyway nice review!

Great review, but I couldn't quite fully make out what you were trying to say around the 6:48 mark about thunderbolt 4 docking. Can you plug in and use a full fledged usb-c docking station with it's own power supply instead of the propriety port? Would it provide power to the SP8 as well?

how is the fan noise on the SP8? Is it too loud to record with microphones in a quiet room? Would use the SP8 to record music/instruments but the fan noise would concern me. How much do you need to push the SP8 before the fans kick in?

I have the SP 7+ and like you feel the move to the SP8 would be wasteful. I'm happy with the 7+, although it does feel dated, despite a couple of its perks. Thanks for your reviews. I always enjoy them.

I'm curious what the benefit this has over something like an XPS 13 since you don't use it as a tablet anyway and I imagine this is hard to use on your lap
