Is The Shingles Vaccine A Good Idea?

Dr. Klaper shares wellness advice on the shingles vaccine. Shingles is a disease that causes a patch of painful blisters that can result in permanent tenderness and sensitivity. This skin infection is caused by the same virus that causes chicken pox. Depending on how healthy your immune system is, the shingles vaccine can be highly effective and will create antibodies.

Question: Do you think getting the shingles vaccine is a good idea?

Even though I decided against receiving the COVID vaccine, because my conscious wouldn't let me, I am going to get the Shingrex vaccine, because I have seen what Shingles has done to family members, including my mother when she was in her mid 60s, and I do not want it.

My husband developed shingles on his chest and side about three years ago when he was 57 years old, and we are Whole Food vegans living a healthy lifestyle, but he was under a tremendous amount of stress I think that caused the outbreak. Fortunately for him I had some Valtrex on hand, because I unfortunately have HSV-2, so I got him started on it immediately.
It was pretty miserable for him for about 2 to 3 weeks, but then it passed and he has had no lingering symptoms. He did however decide to get the shingles vaccine anyway after the fact.
I’ve seen in the advert for the shingles vaccine that it has an increased risk of Guillain-Barré syndrome occurring.

I do not plan on getting a shingles vaccine, I just feel that every vaccine is poking the beast of your immune system and if it goes bad it can be very very bad, and since women are more often diagnosed with autoimmune disorders to me it seems prudent to only take vaccines when really necessary, it’s just my personal risk benefit analysis. I did get the COVID-19 vaccines and booster because it was a matter of public health not just my personal health.

I had a shingles vaccine about 5-6 years ago and they told me it was good for the rest of my life. My wife took the current vaccine in two boosters a few months ago and tells me I need to get the new vaccine even though I had the earlier one. She was sick as a dog from the second booster so I would prefer not to get the shot again. Do I need to get it? I am currently 69 years old.

I knew someone that had Shingles. He said it was the worst pain he ever experienced, and he’s served in the Marine Corps.

I’m 73 and had my 1st Shingrix shot a couple of weeks ago. The shot itself was painless. A few hours later I developed a little soreness at the injection site (right arm), and a few hours after that my entire right arm was a little sore. The next day I felt a little out of it and tired. By the following day I felt completely normal again. In short, it was no big deal.

I have a question for Q & A: I've heard it said that apple cider vinegar is very good for you. After being WFPB for 4 years now and loving it, and after doing much research on the topic, I have a question that I can't find an answer to. If vinegar is a very good house cleaner, and it destroys bacteria, why then does it not destroy the bacteria in our gut? Or does it?

Watch Heather McDonald talking about her vaccine experience, including shingles. Possibly the most perfect video ever made.

If you are in your 60’s healthful living plant based lifestyle, but work in a hospital setting should you get the shingles vaccine ?

Thanks for the video, good doctor. I'm on starch solution 5 years now. I had shingles around age 46 or so, 7 years ago, before wfpb. I was lucky enough to get an antiviral quickly and have fairly minimal symptoms. I had it on my face which was a concern and why I was recommended antiviral. Simple treatment, but I had sensitivity to light for awhile. I was very lucky, also, not to have persistent symptoms like some do.

Best wishes from southeast Arizona.

I just had shingles two years ago. I had an itch that lasted about a month, in an area about the size of a pie plate. That was it. A nuisance itch. Since I had been following a nearly 100% intact food plant exclusive diet (whole food vegan) for many years before, I wonder if that mitigated the symptoms.

Three months after my knee replacement I contracted shingles. I'm active not sedentery 77 yrs young. The shingles rash and pain are still with me but the pain is 50% and less at times . It's going on 6months will this ever go away? several people have said they have had it twice. When can I get the shingles vaccine, the first few weeks were awful and I don't want this again.

I had the first dose. My side effects were so bad that I probably won’t get the second dose.

I had shingles when I was in my thirties after a serious case of poison ivy, then I had shingles in the summer of 2021 after a serious reaction to a wasp sting. I have been eating only plants, mostly whole foods, since 2017. I am currently 65 years of age. The nerve pain from the shingles itself was the worst part. It was severe! I chose to get the shingles vaccine in the fall of 2021. I'm active and I am healthy. I do not take any meds. I am a female who is 5 ft 5 in tall and weigh 120lbs. I did not and will not get any covid vaccines. My choice. Do your research and do what you feel is best for you!

My mother was encouraged to get it and got Bell’s palsy from the vaccine.
