Shingles, a painful rash that is a reactivation of the chickenpox virus, generally affects people with weaker immune systems, or patients on medications that impair the immune system (corticosteroids, mycophenolate, biologic therapies, and many others).

There are two shingles vaccines available today. Zostavax, released in 2006, and Shingrix, released in 2017. This new vaccine is reportedly safe for people with rheumatic disease, and is over 90% effective in preventing shingles and Postherpetic neuralgia. In this video, Dr. Chris Mecoli explains how Shingrix works, and who should receive the vaccine.
