What is Inflammatory Bowel Disease or IBD?

At Nationwide Children's Hospital, our goal is to improve the medical, surgical, psychological and social care of all children with inflammatory bowel disease. In this animation, our patient Maddie explains what inflammatory bowel disease is and how it might affect you. You'll also learn the difference between Crohn's Disease, Ulcerative Colitis and Indeterminate Colitis.

My son has a lot of these symptoms. He gets constipated, sometimes for weeks. He get bloated and sometimes doesn’t want to eat. I’ve talked to doctors but still getting 4th, 5th opinions. I need a doctor to listen. He’s been like this for years, as a toddler, he’s 7 now. The doctors always want to brush it off to his autism and lack of eating although he eats well when he isn’t experiencing these symptoms. 😞

I was diagnosed at 17 but spent most of the year before experiencing symptoms. It was tough but after 12 years of it I'm getting used to it :D

Thanks for sharing this! To add to this, some mistakes people may make in trying to fix gut health include: adding a probiotic to help with excessive gas and bloating (that's just one piece of the puzzle), eliminating a food for 4 days and expecting it solve the issue (will take at least 2 weeks), and not thinking about root causes!

Diagnosed with crohn’s in the 5th grade and those symptoms are entirely correct. I had all of them and became frail, many flare ups and even almost died of a 4.7 hemoglobin blood count. Now 22 and better but it’s still affecting me even today. If anybody needs a test subject patient, my case fits

You can also have constipation and you don't always not feel hungry. You can also be overweight.

Just got diagnosed. Pretty scared but i'm trying stay optimistic. Just sucks because every time I eat I get really extreme stomach pain. Ive probably lost 25 pounds in the last couple months because I know when I eat I'll get excruciating pain in my stomach so I try to avoid eating as much as possible.

I never had stomach pain but got fistula and loss of appetite, undergrowth (now normal) and high fever.

I have sharp pains and frequently get bloated, constantly have a loose stool or diarrhea, i don’t really have a lot of blood in my stool but I sometimes notice it and I’m always tired and nauseous but my pediatrician said I only have ibs and sent me home and I’m starting to get depressed because i literally can’t get up for to long or enjoy my life without pain

My pain was so acute that I had to admit in a hospital. It happened two more times. Acute stomach pain with vomiting but I didn't have much issues with stool. I try eating only healthy food as much as possible
