Updating my cassette on my 29er XC hardtail really helped me. I run 11-40T now and that 40T goat gear helps me bailout of anything.

If your doing a route which isn't too technical or on a mild XC bike geometry Bar ends give your arms a much more natural position and align your elbows much more comfortably for tucking forward and pulling on the bars to push against the pedals. I wouldn't use them on a more aggressive bike/trail though.

Personal tip: try avoiding climbing a steep hill with wet grass. Most of the times it ends badly from personal experience.

As long as you have a smooth pedal stroke, a high cadence isn't a bad thing. I'm racing with a climbing cadence of around 100 and it has been proven to work for me at least.
