I made my first 40 years ago, all most identical to this one. Been using my second for the 18 years now, with one big difference: my intake air comes into the firebox from the rear, using 3" pipe, at the 10:00 position, and only at the last 10" of the forward section is that pipe slotted, for the air to escape. The slot is at the 4:00 position. These two mods preheat the intake air, and due to the angle of the slot, create a swirling effect of the flame path in the firebox. The other huge improvement I came up with was NOT to stuff it with 3 to 4' long pieces of wood! Now I use 16" max, and I keep the fire and coals pulled as far forward as possible, this results in zero visible smoke and a lot more hot water with less wood, which is 90% scrap lumber anyway. With my first unit, with the intake air at the front and long wood, it'd smoke like a SOB for much of the time!

Nice video! I'm considering a similar build. My available tanks are rusted out on the bottom a little. I'm thinking about turning them upside down and putting the rusty area on top. I'll still weld a cap over the rusted area. One advantage is being able to get the tanks for cheap or free.

That looks really good. I am liking what I am hearing. "1/8, 1/4, sch 80". Not "xx gauge". This will have some life bro. Maybe not 20 years but it'll do.

Hey man this is awesome, I’m in the process of building something like this myself. You going to upload another video on it?
