Scotty isn't wrong on this one. I use to own a 2015 Hyundai Elantra, and they gave us these "Free Oil Change" for life basically, and everytime I took it in they would try to sell us stuff. Yeah, they changed the oil, and filter, but they also wanted to charge me $60 to replace the cabin air filter. $60 to replace a cabin air filter..the part alone is $10, and $50 for a 5 minute job?

*goes to Mercedes dealership for free oil change: "So you need a new Mercedes now."

I used to work at a Mazda dealership (Canada). We were only recommending to change things that actually failed, but I know most dealerships just make imaginary faults. The worst condition cars I've seen were the ones that said "only free oil change, don't do anything else" before we even looked at the car.

But 90% of the cars that came in for an oil change, didn't need anything and weren't advised to do anything, except maybe an air filter\AC filter. And we would always show it to the customer to see the condition.

What really pissed me off is that the service advisors would recommend a "tune-up" (injector cleaning) and an alignment without anything wrong with the car. The "tune-up" actually did more harm than good.

I work at Subaru dealer as a lube tech and training for mainshop now but I can tell you that we dont "scam" people. All we do is see the condition of the car, and go down our check list of things that wear or get dirty (like a cabin filter).
It's recommend that you change these but it's always up to you. We bring out the filter to show the customer and let them decide, or even bring the customer inside the shop to look at their car to show them any problems we find and have no issues with that.
Ask questions, talk to the technician that inspected your car, look at the car yourself and use your best judgment if you want to. Stop painting broad stokes on all dealerships. We take pride in our jobs and everyone I work with does the best they can to help people.

We got the free oil change with our new truck. A couple of times they've tried to upsell us, we've declined. They are always polite, very accommodating, and we never feel pressured.

This is why I love listening to and going honest mechanics like my guy Rob Rotondo and most of all my favorite YouTube mechanic Scotty Kilmer. Dealerships all they do is sell stuff and not caring about us customers.

Whenever you’re told something is wrong with your car. Always ask to see what’s wrong. Especially if it it’s the small things. It’s really easy to sell air filters and batteries. So always check. It also doesn’t hurt to take your car to a trusted mechanic as well.

Apple Ford in Columbia MD doesn't do this. They just give you a printout with their suggested stuff to fix, along with an estimate.

Another reason is to get the customer in the habit of going to the dealer for service, so that when the vehicle is no longer under warranty they will already have a relationship in place with the dealership and/or service writer. I own an auto repair shop and can easily see this. By the way, great videos Scotty!

I worked at a Kendall Toyota Dealership in Miami everything you said is 100% True, "Dealers Stealers" nothing but a bunch of crooks.

I make “No thank you, I’m good” as instinctive as breathing these days. From tanning salons to car dealers. Just give me what I ask for, I don’t want your upsale nonsense.

Not always true, Scotty. When I bought my 1998 Saturn, I got free oil changes. They never tried to sell me anything else, and they washed my car every time. Great car, great dealership.

Well, I am more glad to see that Scott uses the oil brand that I use, 5 qt of full synthetic walmart oil...LOL!

On the flip side, it does encourage people to get their oil changed more frequently than they otherwise would, which is a good thing. Plus, you can always say NO to those recommended repairs. I usually do.

or they say they're "free" with a lease, but you know they padded it into the price

The Toyota dealer got mad at me when I complained about them selling me "automatic transmission fluid" when I had a five speed manual transmission. Explain that one to me?

The only reason an oil change should be free is if the car is under warranty. My 2015 Mitsubishi outlander is under a 3 year warranty with Carvision and not only did I get a free oil change, I got a free inspection (tags expired), a recall handled for the front membrane, and a wash as well. Only downside was I sat there waiting for hours but hey they tried to give me all kinds of costs but as soon as I said "its under warranty" they shut up real fast XD the car is sitting at 65k miles so far so that soon to be money pit is doing really well so far and its gonna be due for another oil change soon (I drive quite often) so for now I'm probably looking at a lot of free oil changes
