Elton John - Live in Sydney (March 25, 1984)

This is the television broadcast of Elton's 37th birthday concert in Sydney at the Sydney Entertainment Centre, which would be the sight of his legendary concert with the MSO in 1986.

Because of required commercial breaks the broadcast is lacking two small sections unfortunately due to the way it was shown live on television as it was happening. So the first bits of "Don't Let the Sun..." and "Philadelphia Freedom" are missing from the video. However, the audio exists from an alternate source, so at the very least the audio has been patched in so you can hear all of the set, and see most of it.

Elton was touring for "Too Low For Zero" at the time, and the setlist is highly reminiscent of the set we'd see at the infamous Wembley show following the release of "Breaking Hearts" later that year. The main difference is the presence of more material, this setlist has "Teacher I Need You", "Island Girl", "Crystal", "Pinball Wizard" and "Song For Guy" which would all be removed later in the year.

The best Elton live shows are in the early 80's. He's in his vocal prime here and playing a great mix of songs. Band is OG and on fire.

Wow. You can see that he was clearly in a zone that night...his vocals were off the hinges. Just a fantastic performance and the band was on point. One of the best concerts I've ever seen, and I've seen plenty. Elton, pure rock 'n roll royalty...love him for life. ❤️

I'm 43 so I was too young and in his earlier years not born yet. Thanks to YT I can watch all his concerts and relive the AMAZING moments. Elton John is truly a living legend

My home town, and there is a connection with Elton and the Sydney audience that is unexplainable, Sydney adores Elton and Elton adores Sydney, I've seen him so many times in that venue it still sends chills how the audience just melt for him, imagine the hair on your neck standing on end for 2.5 hours straight, it's that energy.

I saw this tour in August of that year in Portland, Oregon. A couple of songs had been added and subtracted by that time (Levon was the second song, right after opening with Tiny Dancer). I don't remember Teacher I need You in the Portland set list (or maybe I forgot -- it has been 40 years, after all!). Also, it's just weird to see the band playing Island Girl. I'm fortunate to have seen this band twice -- in 1974, and again ten years later.
