(Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds it's cutted out by Copyright! a big sorry)

On December 24, 1974 Elton John played Hammersmith Odeon in London. An hour’s worth of footage from the Christmas Eve concert was featured on the legendary U.K. television program Old Grey Whistle Test and serves as today’s Sunday Cinema selection.

The professionally-shot video below starts off with a funky take on “Bennie & The Jets,” before a double shot of Beatles covers in “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds” and “I Saw Her Standing There.” Elton then works through big hits “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me,” “Honky Cat,” “Saturday Night’s Alright For Fighting” and “Crocodile Rock.” From there, the set includes “The Bitch Is Back,” “Your Song” and a timely version of “White Christmas” featuring Rod Stewart and Gary Glitter.

This bring back happy memories. I don’t think I’m on camera but I was at the show - nearly 49 years ago! It was a brilliant concert at my local venue, (it will always be The Hammersmith Odeon to those of us of a certain age.) Elton and the band were great and it’s almost unbelievable that five decades later he’s still with them and performing to huge crowds of all ages around the world - my kids and grandson are huge fans.

Gawd bless you Elt - happy retirement.

He had the dream team then on those first few albums. Hard rocking, fantastic musicians.

Elton is wonderful, for sure the greatest of all time, at this time with 25 years and an absurd talent.

Last show with the original band until 1982, The atmosphere is fantastic and while Elton is rough in places, he's still singing somewhat good.

It's good to hear Elton's clear voice in these earlier concerts, before the throat problems he had in the 80's.

Ah, so Elton John performed a Christmas Eve concert a year before Queen at the same venue? Sheesh! 🙌🏻

If anyone was at this concert do you remember Elton John flying down a zip wire on to the stage? (I suspect it wasn't actually Elton John on the wire though) It was a privilege to be there.

My favorite part is the look Elton gives when his band mate starts playing the gazoo @ 25:00

Do others agree with my opinion that the Muscle Scholls horns don’t add anything musically in this concert? They just squeal and screech and crack notes.
