A step by step tutorial on knitting a big chunky scarf for beginners

This video is all about knitting your first scarf. First, I'll show you the materials you need and how long you need to knit a scarf (roughly 5 hours for this pattern). And then we'll dive right into starting your first scarf.

I'll show you how to cast on the first stitches with a long-tail cast on and then we'll continue knitting together. This scarf is knit in the garter stitch - the most basic knitting stitch pattern even. You only need to know one stitch: the Knit stitch.

I'll show you how to finish your first row and all following rows. Then, I'll also show you how to join in a new skein once your yarn runs out. And at the very end of this video, I'll show you how to end your scarf.

We'll knit a classic bind-off (or cast-off) technique together. Then, I'll show you how to weave in the tails. And last, but certainly not least, I'll show you how to add fringes to a scarf.

This is a great pattern for absolute knitting beginners that still shows lovely results.

Thank you Norman! This was my first knitting project. I just wanted to learn something new without spending a lot of money so I went to Goodwill and purchased some cheap horrible yarn and the only knitting needles in the Goodwill store. Your project took 3.5 hours for you with your yarn, and 3 weeks for me with my crappy yarn! But I did it! It’s a horrendous color and scratchy to boot, but it’s finished and I’m strangely proud of the ugly thing. Thank you so much for the excellent lesson and my first adventure in knitting. Next time I will buy yarn I actually like.

I am by no means a new knitter (learned as a 8year old). For the fun of it, i followed your tutorial to get practice using continental. Your instruction is excellent. The way you combine verbal explanation w/slow closeup demonstration. I also learned a new join technique.

Thank you thank you 🙏 Norman
Love the scarf, very happy with it. Loved joining the two yarns, so excited, it works!
This is my third project and learnt lots, the bigger wool made it easier to see how stitches form and finishing off made more sense as I can clearly see how to weave in between for a seamless finish 🙏✨😊💜

Praise you! This technique is a bit harder for my hands to get. It's slow going but my gosh, my stitches are way more consistent and nicer looking than the other tutorials that I tried to follow.

Thanks for the great video. I am just learning to knit and sadly made a mistake in the stitch. I want to unravel that row without unraveling the whole scarf. Do you have a tutorial for that? I think it's the only thing that this video misses if aimed at absolute beginners...

My first project after 2 basic clothes, was a scarf with curly fluffy yarn 🙈 it hide mistakes well, but I got told later that it is the hardest yarn to use. I spent 10 months 🙈

Hi Norman, I am a new beginner here. I have a question.. once you make your first "cast on" stitch are the "cast on" stitches that follow using the yarn from the ball or the yarn from the tail? I have watched the video many times...I just can't tell. Thank You so much in advance for your help with my question and for your videos. I am looking forward to being able to knit away! Have a wonderful day.
