Why do RAM sticks need to be separated in the DIMM slots?

A common question people ask is why RAM sticks need to be seperated when used in a 4 channel DIMM slot configuration. If you are using 2 ram sticks on a 4 slot motherboard, 2 of those slots are considered optimized for performance. This is generally stated in the instructions of your motherboard. Using these 2 slots when using 2 sticks gives you the best memory performance.

It is because ram sticks are male, and if they are next to eachother they are gay.

This dual channel slots counting always made me confused, since on DDR2 dual channel is 1&2, then 3&4. Same on Socket 939. Then it seems it was 1&3 and 2&4 on DDR3. On AM5 starts at 2&4 then comes 1&3. In the past they were colored differently, like red for the first dual channel slots 1&2, then blue or black for the second pair 2&4 on AM2 or LGA775 for instance. Then they started making them all black, and you needed the manual or a trial to get them right.

some older dell systems have both channels right next to each other, always put the ram in the white slots no matter where they are on dell systems

The reason why Ram sticks are separated from the dimm slots is because of the Male Urinal Rule! No Men or We should consider as Ram sticks Should be close to each other and should be 1 Urinal or 2 Urinals apart.
