I agree with David on the first 2 points. If your not in your home country you'll always be a "foreigner" although in my trips to China I've always felt very welcome. Second social pressure is everywhere, you'll be much happier if you learn how to "march to the beat of a different drummer". Third point I'd think I'd like to live in a bubble, at least for awhile. I am so tired of listening to political rhetoric going on now. The good ones on both sides are keeping quiet while the nut job extremists are getting way to much air time.

Point 3: After 10 years livi了ng in Europe, it's only until the breakout of covid I started to pay attention to western media and found it really annoying, so full of fake news, lies, ideological bullshit, hate, devision, discrimination... I was much happier in the Chinese bubble when I was in China! I become kind of depressed, want to go back to China but I cannot because my kids are at the crucial years of study... Don't get me wrong, I like the life in the west, but I hate the political atmosphere on China. Everytime I talked to local people I wanna tell them China is not what they read about in the western media, but I feel it's useless because they have been brainwashed for so long time they won't abandon their bias, prejudice.... They have never been to China but they say a lot of rubbish about China.

Thoughts
On your first point - That's actually not a China specific thing. It's true of a lot of Asian (and I suspect, most) countries. You'll always be a "foreigner".
On your second point - The social pressure to conform is normal everywhere. Again, not unique to China.
On your third point - The bubble, agreed.

I think regarding the rules of society for people's life, it's a bit exaggerated. It was definitely a thing back maybe 10 or 15 years ago, but today I feel parents are much more relax and supportive of their children than before. A bit like for the one child policy and the golden son.

Thank you Marc! This is very informative and insightful coming from your point of view as foreigner who has been living there > 5 yrs 👍
With burden of 1.4 Billion citizens, I know the govt. works tirelessly to maintain stability, avoid chaos and improve the country in many areas.
Hopefully after China reaches it's main aim of "Common prosperity" they will Gradually opening up to the world. And let those "ideas" (in a good way) around the globe coming into the country. Then they can catch up with HK and Taiwan in terms of creativity, dynamics, etc... ❤🇨🇳

Haha, finally you did an English language video. Occasionally watch your Chinese ones on weibo. The first and second points are not really unique to China. Unless it is a migrant country, one will always be seen as a foreigner. As for the 2nd point it is very typical in Asian societies, It is very strong in Japanese and Korean societies as well. I wish to visit a few places in China but her border is closed to international travellers. Agreed with you on the 3rd point.

I don't agree with your "bubble" statement. I think people living in the USA are more in a bubble. The average person on the street in the US, regardless of location knows almost nothing of other countries. The average guy on the street in China knows more about other countries. A simple experiment of showing a blank atlas and asking the guy on the street in the US to point out a few countries and you will get my drift. The list goes on and on and on.... but the worst thing is that, the average American pretends like he / she knows anything. They will just lie straight face about things they know nothing about. That, my friend, is "Living in a bubble"

Point 1: I would say I.understand people from immigrant countries who fall in love with China and want to be Chinese, but i'm really sorry to say that China is not an immigrant country and.will not be for quite some time, so...I think the best thing you can.do is to marry a Chinese and make your kids Chinese!😃😃😃

As far as I know, my understanding is that all those Western apps and platforms are actually not banned in China. They decided to withdraw from serving Chinese market, as they did/do not want to comply with the Chinese rules and regulations!! Am I wrong??
