Also, if you have to pay and there's a gate where you get a ticket from, check that ticket! At places like gas stations along highways or at railway station you might get a discount when you buy something there and show the ticket. So basically the toilet is free for paying customers.

I speak from personal experience.

Europe is far more tourist friendly in terms of "bathrooms" and places to sit down. There will always be plenty of benches and seating in public places. Toilets are pretty easy to find and will be in places like train stations, bus stations etc.

I was shocked when I visited NYC a couple of months ago. Very few places to sit unless you're buying food or drinks. Bathrooms practically don't exist. It's absolutely disgusting.

I think it's been done to try and make locations less appealing for the homeless. In one location I had to sit down as I was tired and needed to use my asthma inhaler. So I had to sit on the floor. Within 30 seconds a member of staff appeared and told me I had to stand or the police would be called. Shocking.
