Men of the 101st Airborne Division move down the Rue Holgate in the Normandy town of Carentan shortly after its liberation.

The 101st were instrumental in the capture, defence and subsequent liberation of Carentan from the German 6th Fallschirmjäger Regiment on the 12th June 1944.

The fight for Carentan was depicted in Band of Brothers Episode 3.

Western Europe really suffered destruction during the liberation from Nazi Germany. The Marshall Plan helped fund the rebuild.
