Men of the 101st Airborne seize the key town of Carentan to link Omaha and Utah Beachheads on the 12th June 1944. They would hold the town against a determined counterattack from a mixed Kampfgruppe of Fallschirmjäger and Panzer Grenadiers on the 13th June. This was depicted in HBOs mini series Band of Brothers.

It’s crazy how some of these places are frozen in time. A haunting picture of a time long since past, forever acting as a reminder of the true horrors that we as humans can put each other through.
I’ve been watching a lot of these shorts recently and it occurred to me that likely in some of these old photos we maybe gazing upon what was someone’s last moments before entering a fight they never got to leave. It’s moments like that where you start to understand just how fragile life truly is, one minute you’re sitting around a liberated town talking to your fellow men. But the next your marching towards a path unknown, not knowing if that day will be your last. In some photos you can see this upfront with tanks and other machines of war completely destroyed or abandoned on the side of a road. To know people were in that before they succumbed to the same fate that befell their tank only for what is now their tomb to be immortalized in a photograph…To me war is a learning experience for humanity…It’s terrifyingly beautiful in a sense for where there is chaos lies opportunity…Opportunity to grow and learn and achieve feats never thought possible before, we saw this with the machine gun. Then the tank and eventually the nuke. I guess what I’m trying to say although it’s a horrible thing war can also benefit humanity despite the horrors it can create

An average age of world war 2 of men serving in combat or on the ground on both sides was 17-20 years of age … most still teenagers or jus becoming an adult … and most of them perished for our freedom … we will never forget
