I can't believe how many dog trainers get this wrong. Puppies bite because that's how they explore the world, through their mouths. When puppies play with each other and one puppy bites another puppy too hard, the other puppy yelps to let them know it hurt. That's how they learn to inhibit their bite so that they do not hurt one another. It's called bite inhibition, and you only have until 16 weeks of age to teach it to your puppy. The developmental window to learn this starts to close at 12 weeks and is fully closed by 16 weeks. This is important, especially if you have a powerful breed with a strong bite force! If you do not teach your puppy to inhibit his bite on human flesh by 16 weeks of age, they will NEVER learn it. But if they do learn it but 16 weeks, it will stay with them for life. So let's say your now 2 year old dog accidentally bites you but was never taught how hard is too hard.... now you have a serious injury. But if they've learned to inhibit their bite force, you might have a bruise but that's about it. This recently happened to me. My 18 month GSD was worked up trying to get to something but I was holding him back. He redirected his aggression towards me to make me let go so he could get at that other thing. But because I'd taught him bite inhibition, he didn't even break the skin. It hurt and was bruised but did not puncture my skin. His bite force is credibly powerful...I can't even pry his mouth open when his jaw is clenched. No doubt I'd have had a serious injury had I not taught him as a puppy to inhibit his bite.

I wish dog trainers knew and taught this. It's OK to teach your puppy not to bite, but only AFTER you've taught them to inhibit their bite! I've only seen one dog trainer on YouTube who teaches about bite inhibition and how to teach it to your dog. If you have a puppy, especially if it's a powerful breed, do yourself a favor and search for that video and educate yourself.

That's what I did with one of my rescues. He was only 4 weeks old and very "bity" Brst was to give him a toy and play tug of war with him lol

I love playing with their mouths so I don't discourage it. I just do a loud "OW!" And stop playing for a few minutes. They get it very fast and learn to be gentle whenever you yelp in pain, be it while playing or in general

Hi, I have a 10 month rescue pup who I believe is a Carolina Dog mix. She has an extreme nipping problem when excited or frustrated. It seems to be a herding behavior with heel and knee biting most of the time. She also likes to run at you full speed until she runs right into you biting you. I've been working with a trainer and we are at a loss as to what to do.
We've tried the giving her something else to chew on but that only works some of the time. We've decided to try a remote training collar next.
Do you have any suggestions we can try? When I adopted her I was looking for an emotional support animal with the possibility of advancing to a service dog considering that I have a myriad of medical issues.
As things stand right now we are her emotional support people 😅😂 She has every possible anxiety a dog could possibly have. We're working through them little by little.

If you redirect to a toy youre essentially rewarding the biting. If you want to direct to a toy you have to do it before they bite or they go "every time i bite a human they grab me a toy" and now youve got a new problem

So the solution to puppy biting isn’t what Kristi Noem did?
