The Most Deadly Job in the World

There have been some incredibly dangerous jobs throughout history.

But very few of them were as likely to cause you to die before your allotted time as often as being King or Queen of England.

The chances of you living past the age of 60 once you had ascended to the throne were as low as 16%

Here we take a look at that in some more detail.

Ok fam, this is fucking stonkingly amazing work.

People got to 85 shockingly often. Anton Van Leeuwenhoek and Christopher Wren were nearly 92 when they died, in the same year, being born in the same year.

Really good work, Oz. As it happens, my son is a professional logger who routinely climbs trees to cut them from the top down. He thinks the "most dangerous job" ranking helps keep his pay scale as high as it is. To no one's surprise, his wife has occasional doubts about his sense of judgement.

On a less serious note, do I get a producers credit in lieu of a set dressing equipment fee (see object off Oz's port shoulder)? Always happy to help a brother out. :)

The most deadly _recorded_ is still Roman Emperor! Out of 69 Roman Emperors, 62% died of a violent death. For 34 of them (one less than half), it was plain and undisputed assassination.
(Saleh, J. (2019) Statistical reliability analysis for a most dangerous occupation: Roman emperor, Palgrave Communications 5/155)

But I would guess that the more into the past you go, the less I would be on your chances of reaching old age as a head of state.

Love the video, but...I see your English royalty and raise you the granite carvers of Barre Vermont.

In the 1880s, Barre gray granite became the stone of choice for memorials, public sculpture, and architecture. In order to speed production the granite companies installed steam hammers and then air hammers for the carvers. This generated a great deal of silica laden dust. There was no concept of workplace safety and health in those days, and reportedly one couldn’t see from one end of a building to the other because of the clouds of dust.

The result was a health disaster. Getting a job carving stone was essentially a death sentence. Young, talented sculptors died in their 30s and 40s of silicosis or tuberculosis. Hardly any of them made it past 50. Essentially a 100% work related death rate.

Hope cemetery in Barre is an outdoor sculpture park, full of monuments carved by the bereaved friends of the deceased. Who, of course, would soon follow them to the grave.

It got so bad by the 1930s that they were running out of skilled workers. The granite sheds finally installed decent ventilation and the death rate from silicosis dropped to zero after 1940.

I have tried carving granite at a friend’s studio and the close-in ventilation tubes will almost take your wristwatch off.

Are you saying that Mel Brooks was wrong when he said "It's good to be the king"?

Your presentation, brother, was most edifieing, in its carefull production and delivery both. I must warn you, however, against keeping that Bird-ſpit, which is leaning against your wall, as it is fit only for the murder of poultrie and young gallants tutored in imperfect fight. Surely, a ſhort Sword and buckler, as carried by our victorious Aunceſtors, would serve you far better.
