Sam took a break to complete college, and several more people began their quests to inform the people of weird and niche history. God speed brothers. Sam is proud

The role of a sapper (combat engineer) has evolved since the days of tunnelling under a castle and fighting bloody hand to hand combat in the dark if discovered by the enemy. My father was a sapper with the 1st Australian Task Force in the Vietnam War. His role was construction and maintaining of all manner of structures, roads, landing strips, as well as demolitions, and performing general infantry duties. To me it sounds like an interesting job.

Fun fact about the word "petard": it's still used in French today, to refer to both firecrackers and joints (the smokable type)

Being a member of the Beatles is also incredibly deadly, with a 50% fatality rate in the last century.

For some unknown reason I always assumed that the word ‘petard’ was French for Butt and pictured someone hoisting themselves up with a rope attached to their bottom

i feel like EVERYONE in battles in the pre-modern, early modern, and modern era (so… up until WWII but also much of WWII and vietnam and other wars we weren’t involved in ) was a heartbeat from violent death or dismemberment at all times.
I’d rather be digging UNDER the castle than trying to climb its walls, or attacking the gate, or anything like that.
Being inside the castle was much better until the walls fell from sappers or cannon or trebuchet or until the food and water ran out. Or they storm the walls and torture everyone to death as punishment for not opening the gate.

So being a petardier was a basically a meme job. Imagine watching your homie make it through the belly of the beast only to be blown up by his own bomb (whilst running away might I add)

i worked with quick lime at a alcohol destilery for some years. And yes, this shit is really nasty, it creates a clould at the slightest air current, and it can, and will, cause corrosion even on iron. working with it was horrible, and it would usually impregnate on the fabric of the uniforms and rubber gloves. At the end of the year, the clothing would be uncolored and very fragile. thank god it never fucked up my vision
