One last mention..RIP to Daniel Kurtis. I hung out with him while living in Huntington Beach back in 05'-06. Awesome kid of only 20-22yrs old. You reminded me at 15:32 On October 30, 2006, the fire was fully contained. Five firefighters died defending a vacant house locally known as the "Octagon" that was ultimately destroyed by the fire: Jason McKay, Jess McLean, Daniel Kurtis Najera, Mark Loutzenhiser and Pablo Cerda.

Two from this list. My roommate from back in the day, late 1970s, was a sought-after welder, so wanted was he that he was hired away from his Sioux Falls, SD welding job to learn how to dive and weld underwater in the Gulf of Mexico. He made it sound like no big deal, but I could tell he was definitely wavering a bit on the truth.

#2: My brother-in-law lived in Alaska before he met my sister (from Iowa). In the 1960s, he was a smoke jumper in Alaska and in Montana. He's a rather reserved kind of guy so getting details from him was and still is impossible. Not my favorite B in Law but he's kind of a hero in our family.

Me? Just a lowly (retired) Iowa farmer and US Navy vet.

I actually was a Pizza delivery person for about 6 months back in the day. The most challenging thing I faced was driving on my spare tire (donut) for over 1000 miles.

Wow. U actually put ironworkers into this...finally! In 1997, when I was just 16 y.o., my father was another ironworker killed on site. He fell (NO HARNESS at this job site) & on his way down, an I-beam was coming by at the WORST moment. He smashed his head on it & died before he even reached the ground. I'll always be a daddy's girl & I miss him every single day!

I had, yeah past tense, an uncle who was a lineman. He got across the wrong wire and got knocked off a power pole. He never walked right again, right up until up he died.

Roofing isn't as bad as some of these but I've seen some crazy shit. One guy accidentally stuck his arm up to his elbow in 600 degree liquid asphalt. another guy 1st day on the job fell of a second story apartment roof .compound fracture below the elbow. Had to drive himself to the hospital because nobody else would miss work to take him. One dumbass ran off a roof chasing his hat and just like a cartoon it seemed like he was hovering in the air before boom. I never laughed so hard how he didn't break his leg is beyond me. Nowadays OSHA has all these safety harness you got to wear and that's when I quit roofing for a company and started doing my own gig.

and the ones making the BIG money are not putting their lives at risk. Instead, they just let their employees deal with all the hard work.

I've got a couple friends who are king crab fishermen. They've said that its only dangerous like that during the winter, which makes sense considering thats when the winds actually get to those speeds

I worked as a pizza delivery driver for Pizza Hut in the SE part of Houston when I was in high school. It was an experience especially in Houston needless to say I quit after I got robbed at gun point and had my car stolen.
