While this is technically true, joining NATO requires unanimous support from all the current member states anyways, so changing the treaty to accommodate an Asian nation wouldn't be any different from admitting a European one.

It really boils down to where you draw the line between Europe and Asia. Cyprus, Turkiye (already NATO), Georgia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Kazakhstan and Russia all can be considered both European and Asian. (Of course, if Russia was somehow allowed in, the whole alliance would lose it’s purpose.)

Probably some kind of pacific defense alliance would make more sense.

I can see that it should be done, but I rather think that if Taiwan joined that there would swiftly be war with China, so I can see them leaving the treaty as is so that that doesn't become an issue at this point. I personally support Taiwan. This is just what I predict.

Back to SEATO ?: South East Asian Treaty Organizaton

I think QUAD and AUKUS Plus is a kind of SEATO in a modern outfit.

I believe NATO stands for the North Atlantic Trade Organization, so given that the Asian countries aren't near the Atlantic Ocean, they can't join

Merely a written technicality, there are a lot more geopolitical and social reasons why there isn't a NATO in Asia than just what is 'technically' written on a document stating Europe, which it isn't fully acurrate as the mentioned text only makes mention of the lands that would be defended under the current members

Nor should they, the US should make a completely different treaty with them. So that europe is not tied to Asian countries as they will have different security needs.

However, some European nations should be included as they closer in proximity, have more intrinsic ties and understanding of the geopolitics and will provide a counter balance to the US military industrial complex

People let's get this straight.... If in the territorial waters of the Philippine islands..there was a discovery of really think the US wouldn't find a loophole to let the island nation SMH..!!! You really think the reason we went into Iraq was due to freedom and weapons of mass destruction...ya right....

Back in the day, there was an alliance known as SEATO. It was largely U.S. backed, but it collapsed into irrelevance with the Vietnam War and withdrawal of American forces.

It’s pretty much a shame I’ve got to say.
There are other countries in the North Atlantic which are not in Europe.

Question: if say, japan gets attacked. And they have a defensive pact with the US. So an attack on japan is an attack on the US. and an attack on the US is an attack on NATO. Can the US call for a response of NATO?
