Показать описание
After being turned back by a snowstorm at the Redhorn Pass and unwilling to risk the Gap of Rohan for fear of capture by Isengard, the Fellowship attempted to cross the Misty Mountains through the abandoned dwarven city of Moria. Gimli hoped to encounter, or at least discover the fate of, Balin's expedition to re-establish Khazad-dum with which the Dwarves had lost contact. At the end of their third day in Moria the Fellowship took refuge in the Chamber of Mazarbul—the site of Balin's Tomb—and learnt of his failure from the Book of Mazarbul. Immediately afterwards they heard the sounds of drums and horn blasts. Gandalf was able to ascertain that a band of Orcs, including several black Uruks of Mordor, and at least one Cave-troll were approaching one of the chamber's two doors.

Plot
An ancient Ring thought lost for centuries has been found, and through a strange twist of fate has been given to a small Hobbit named Frodo. When Gandalf discovers the Ring is in fact the One Ring of the Dark Lord Sauron, Frodo must make an epic quest to the Cracks of Doom in order to destroy it. However, he does not go alone. He is joined by Gandalf, Legolas the elf, Gimli the Dwarf, Aragorn, Boromir, and his three Hobbit friends Merry, Pippin, and Samwise. Through mountains, snow, darkness, forests, rivers and plains, facing evil and danger at every corner the Fellowship of the Ring must go. Their quest to destroy the One Ring is the only hope for the end of the Dark Lords reign.

The fact that Gandalf knew the dwarves in this expedition and was even a part of their company during The Hobbit Trilogy and was dear to him, knowing most of them had died is heartbreaking...

I absolutely love Ian McKellan's reading of the dwarf's last stand. This whole part of the story was dramatized so well!

2:03 That's Boromir's hand, comforting Gimli. Further proving he was an absolute Chad.

The way the final text in the book seems so rushed sends chills down my spine.

They have taken the bridge and the second hall. We have barred the gates, but can not hold them for long. The ground shakes. Drums, drums in the deep. We cannot get out. A shadow moves in the dark. We cannot get out. They're coming

As a kid I watched this listening to Gandalf's voice as he read, imagining the scene being read. Now I listen, but simultaneously imagining the scene and a young dwarf scribe writing quickly as he held the book in-hand, listening to dwarves around him shouting orders.

He catches key phrases like "We cannot get out!" (said more in a frustrated tone by a soldier)

"Drums!" -- another: "I hear drums!" -- another: "Drums in the deep!" Then the ground shakes (the balrog they didn't know about)-- the scribe records this.

He hears sounds of orcs at the barred gates, one shouts "They are coming!" As he writes this last bit the door bursts open, to which he drops his book and quill and draws his ax.

I cried upon hearing about Balin’s fate and then started laughing when Gandalf gave Pippin the “You idiot” look.

These two chapters in the book are absolutely enthralling... A Journey in the Dark and The Bridge of Khazad-Dum.

In the novel, after reading the Mazarbul Book, Gandalf gave the book to Gimli. Gandalf knew Dain in Erebor would like to know what happened to Balin and the dwarves that went with him to Moria.

When you realise that gandolf was taking the book from his dead friend Oris hand and didnt know it.

Makes you wonder. The orcs went through all that effort to take Moria, but chose not to use most of it? They didn't even bother to remove any of the bodies, just left them to rot while they went back to living in the lowest levels, leaving the gates unguarded and ignored. The Fellowship almost made it through the entire mountain without encountering them

Ian Mckellan played Gandalf so excellently. it would be hard for someone else to embody the character the way he did.

I have to say as Gandalf reads the last few sentences you can feel the fear in those words. It’s like the ghost(referring to the dwarf) of who wrote them is reaching out from his grave to grab hold of my very soul and I feel scared while also wanting to cry. All in all a very well put together scene and brilliant acting from the actor(I can’t spell his surname so not going to try).

The book version is longer and therefore much more tragic to read.

The skeleton holding the book is Ori from the Hobbit. See: Balin's Mission to Moria Explained.
