In hindsight its kind of heartwarming that Thorin giving Mithril to Bilbo would later help to protect Frodo's life, thus proving Gandalf's point about about it being ordinary deeds of everyday folk that keeps the darkness at bay. A single gift from one friend to another ends up playing a part in saving all of Middle Earth from evil.

I like how basically they're all impressed about Thorin handing out armor that's worth more than the GDP of Bilbo's entire country and Frodo is quietly freaking out that he has the national debt under his shirt.

Many might not understand the significance on this.

Thorin gift for Bilbo was an testament of how much their friendship meant to him. Considering how Dwarves are, and the fact that it was a piece of invaluable craftmanship that was also a family heirloom, it was, indeed, a kingly gift.

Bilbo's true friends never lived in the same place he was born from. And it is the same case for many people today.

We often found our true friends in the most unexpected places.

I didn't know this extended scene. It's just great that Gandalf mentioned Thorin in Gimlis presence because many of the lotr and Hobbit fans are very interested in Gimlis view and opinion about all these things happened in the Hobbit and it gives a very good connection between both trilogies, just awesome! :DDDD

In all the years that I have loved the Lord of the Rings movies, I can't believe that I've never seen this scene before. And I can't believe Gandalf already mentioned Thorin. The connections between the Hobbit (book & film) were more than just Balin's Tomb and the map of the Lonely Mountain in the Shire.

It's cool that Legolas is right beside Gandalf when he mentions Thorin because Legolas was in The Hobbit movies and would have first hand knowledge/experience of those events, so in a strange coincidence it actually helps the scene a little, because Gandalf is looking at Legolas when he's speaking.

And let's not forget Gimili who is the son of Gloin. He spoke up when he heard Thorin's name.
