I heard there was a very cute reason on why the password was "friend" in elvish.

Apparently, hundreds of years ago the dwarfs and the elves in this region got along really well. Both as trading partners and as kindred spirits. So eventually the dwarfs made their own secret entrance for the elves.

And the door is pretty much saying "who are you?"
And the elves would say
"yOUR FRIEND!"

Which I just find precious in the story...and a little sad that it was eventually forgotten.

The password here is actually ingenious. The language couldn’t be said by normal petty men, and the enemies are so evil they’re probably unable to utter the word “friend”. Only the true allies of the dwarves are allowed to enter

Frodo: "Um...maybe its a riddle. Maybe we're supposed to say 'Friend' in Elvish and the doors will open."
Gandalf: "Frodo! You're a genius!"
Pippin rolls his eyes, throws his hands in the air and shakes his head....

That “do not disturb the water” line still freaks me out today. I absolutely hate open/deep water due to all the things that could be lurking down there.

What I love about Gandalf in the book is that he is really cranky because he hasn’t had a smoke.

I love how you can hear the frustration/sarcasm in Gandalf’s voice. Ha
Ian Mckellen is phenomenal as Gandal; in fact the entire cast is irreplaceable in thier roles.
The editors of these films don’t get enough credit though. They masterfully edited these films with the best takes and timing and pacing. Just perfection 👏

can we appreciate for a moment, that aragorn sent bill away, BEFORE they opened the door, and were in fact struggling with it. what if gandalf couldnt get it open, then was like, "well looks like its the gap of rohan. saddle up the ponies, we're leaving."
