If anyone's interested, there's a channel called Tasting History where he makes and tries all these types of ancient foods. He gave up a job offer at Disney for us, so i felt like I owed him a shoutout for his sacrifice.

The idea of honey being a sweetener for the poor to an expensive item with sugar, now, a cheap item is fascinating. Just like lobster going from junk for the poor to a royal treat.

The more things change the more they stay the same. It brings me great joy that one of my ancestors also probably got food poisoning from the medieval version of McDonalds

Junk food being more affordable than healthy stuff, and frowned on by the wealthy as a result. Some things really don't change.

Makes sense that pretzels were considered blessed by the monks who made them..after all, they are hole-y.

Anyone who thinks sweets on meat sounds gross has never had fresh salmon baked or grilled with a maple crust. Absolutely was one of my faves.

Modern History TV did a series on medieval food by the various classes: peasants, knights, nobility, royalty, etc. Peasants actually ate very hardy food because they did a lot of manual labor; a lot of salmon and brown bread cooked in communal bakeries.

I thought there was a fast food chain called Friar's Fat Boy in medieval times. They gave free battle- axes and paper crowns to people with their meals. I saw it on TV once.

Tim Hortons (Canadian coffee shop chain) used to sell soups, chilli or stews in a bread bowl. When I was in early high school (so like 13 yo) I would sometimes spend my whole week's of allowance on one of those during my lunch break. They were filling, cheap delicious and kept me warm and full for the rest of the day. Now I'm hungry just thinking about it:)
