I don't know if it's true, but it's kinda entertaining.
In the Russian language, there is an idiom meaning something like "being at your lowest". It literally translates into English something like "to get to the handle". It's said that the handle in question was part of a pretzel or some similar baked good. People would eat this thing outside and wouldn't wash their hands before, so eating the handles was bad hygiene. If you did it, it meant that you were either super poor or super cheap, neither say good about you.

Trenchers were flat rounds of stale bread, used as an edible plate…later in history replaced by wooden rounds that eventually became our modern tableware and such things as cheese boards, etc. Where are you getting this bread bowl idea? Are you confusing trenchers, stuffed breads and 'coffins' of hot water pastry? No doubt there were those who messed about with other bread serving ideas. The actual day to day wasn't bread bowl oriented back then.
