Graphics Cards You Can't Buy: The Unique 5-Fan GTX 680 / HD 7970

The world of PC hardware used to vary quite a bit more than it does today when it came to the design of certain graphics cards. Among them were Gigabyte's Super Overclocked GTX 680 and HD 7970, two cards that featured a totally unique 5 fan Windforce cooler that certainly made them stand out. Today I'll be talking about why they existed, why the design never caught on as well as taking a look at the performance of a 680 and 7970 in a few demanding games.

If you get your hands on one of these cards, I'd love to see a sound test compared to a card with a normal fan configuration. One of the down sides to having multiple such fans, especially if they're all spinning at the same RPM, is that the noise they create multiplies because it's all at the same frequency. This is why later EVGA ICX cards allow you to set independent fan speeds.

I suggest you doing thermal testing as well, especially for a video that the whole point is the cooling system. Noise is a bit harder since it requires extra equipment, but temp can be easily monitored by software.

Obviously not as crazy, but Inno3D have versions of their cards with a standard 3-fan configuration at the bottom, but also a fourth smaller fan on the side of the card. I think they only sell cards in Europe and Asia, so there isn't too much online on how they perform.
