The graphics card shortage has left people wondering about how to get their hands on a GPU without paying a scalper - but some of the alternatives are far worse than others.

Years ago when I was still learning about computer stuff, I was given a hand-me-down PC, I bought a low end a GPU and had it installed just for the sake of having one.
I felt very proud of it and and when someone visits, I would always tell them that I have a Graphics Card 😂😂😂

"Just hope that your existing GPU doesn't fail" nice Tech Tip

This stuff isn’t a “scam” as much as literal fraud and misrepresentation. Those people should go to prison

Be honest, Louis Rossmann probably flipped the nearest table when you asked him about GPU reflowing

The GDDR5 1030 can still be fine as an interim solution for upgrading an older optiplex, as long as you have reasonable expectations.
Your advice about the DDR4 version was spot on, though. The DDR4 version is kind of a waste of silicon, and should have been branded as the GT 1010 or something to that effect.

For the 2nd year in a row, the 2021 award for "Good enough, I guess" GPU goes to...

the GTX 970

A GT 730 is the most basic of cards. Not meant for real gaming, is probably over 6 years old and should be around $20 cdn.
Not almost $100.

I find it "interesting" that with Intel's GPUs coming, Nvidia and AMD suddenly say prices and availability will suddenly, magically improve for their cards. Fascinating.

Note, if you are using an iGPU, especially an AMD APU, having fast memory in dual channel is extremely important. Also worth noting that igpus can be overclocked using the motherboards bios on most motherboard with a CPU overclocking capable chipset. They tend to have a good bit of headroom left because the manufacture wants to hit a certain TDP target. But if you can overclock an iGPU, i would recommend it as long as things dont get too hot

I personally sadly got scammed for a 3080, lost 760€, case is still open in court but it is not looking good. Be careful people, this really can happen to everyone

I'm honestly still happy with my GTX 1080 Ti. Would I love an RTX 3080? Heck yeah. But I'm definitely not paying scalper prices right now.

Newegg has lost all credibility to me over the last couple years. They've basically decided that allowing scalpers & scammers on their marketplace is so profitable that it outweighs the damage it does to the pc market and their customers.

I'm done shopping with them.

This explains a lot. I was swapping out my old GPU (2080 Super) from my dads computer to give to my niece who is starting to game. My dad had a "GTX 1050 TI" sitting around and I could not for the life of me get it to recognize nvidia drivers correctly or output more than x800 resolution. Upon reinspecting the box, I noticed there were no actual Branding markings or Nvidia Logos. The drivers were supposed to be downloaded from a chinese website listed on a piece of I was dumbfounded because it was showing as a 1050 in the hardware info. I figured he bought a fake GPU but couldn't figure out how they could fake it.

I call those low in cards "display adapters"
They're what you get when you need a 4k60 output for a HTPC or something that doesn't have intergrated graphics.

When buying or selling anything online and having to meet the person to do the transaction or collection, I usually ask that we meet at the local police station and do the transaction there. You'd be surprised how many of the so called buyers or sellers quickly back out. Which is a red flag to me, that they were not who they said they were.

In my case as well as a women I don't like strangers coming to my house for safety reasons. It's like that extra layer of protection one does with your GPS for your car. Don't have your home address in it. That is just inviting the thieves that may have broken in or taken your car to come do your house too. So we have our home address on it as our nearest police station.

When the pandemic first hit I wanted to build a PC and I got a GTX 1080 from a friend. At the time I was hoping to upgrade my GPU soon but now I'm just happy to have it.

I had been really wanting to try dlss and ray tracing, so I bought an MSI gaming x trio 2080 for 600 and sold my strix 1070ti for 450. Both local sales. I think i got pretty lucky, other than maybe buying a prebuilt for a 3060 or something. Just really sucks how things are going now.

I still remember the ancient video where Linus got flack for saying low-end GPUs are a bad idea. He was still in his garage at the time. As for $20-$30 more you could get 2x performance over a $50 GPU and you were better off saving a little more for a better card. I wanna say this was around the first mining boom/shortages.

I think people are missing the point of the GT 1030. First, it's 30 watts only, which means little cooling requirements and noise. Second it comes with a half-height bracket. Finally, it has hardware decoding of VP9 and HEVC codecs. It's perfect for an HTPC build that allows some low-powered gaming.
