In this video Doctor O'Donovan explains key things you need to know about tongue tie (medically called ankyloglossia), including symptoms and treatment options such as tongue tie release surgery.

What is a tongue tie in a baby?

If your baby is struggling to feed, they may have an issue called a tongue tie. In this video I am going to explain what a tongue-tie in a baby is, what the implications of a tongue-tie are for both you and your baby, and what treatment options are available. Tongue-tie (ankyloglossia) is a condition present at birth that restricts the movement of a baby's tongue.

The underside of the tongue is connected to the floor of the mouth by a piece of tissue known as the lingual frenulum. In babies with tongue-tie, the frenulum is thicker and/or tighter (shorter) than usual. This restricts the movement of their tongue and can cause problems with feeding. A tongue-tie can involve the entire underside of the tongue or just part of it.

Here in the UK I was very lucky, my midwife noticed my sons tongue tie after only a few days old. He dribbled so much milk that they advised me to wean him early. He had to wait until a year to go into hospital and have it cut.

Here in the PH, my baby's doctors and lactation consultant said the tongue tie of my baby is slight and to just observe.. but to me, we've been experiencing the symptoms you've described, especially him doing frequent feedings and falling asleep before finishing a feeding.. my nipples are cracked and bleeding despite using nipple shields.. To me by now, the benefits of cutting the tongue tie outweigh the risks.. what should I do, seek an opinion of a tongue tie specialist?

As a Tongue Tied Adult going through my tongue tie release journey, please get your child’s tongue tie released!!!
The tongue tie has farther negative impact than feeding and speaking. It affects the formation of your skull as your tongue is not able to press on the upper palate of the mouth - resulting in a narrow upper palate which means narrow nasal cavity. Harder to breathe through the nose. Higher risk of sleep apnea. Grinding teeth in sleep. Gum recession. TMJ & facial pain. More frequent headaches and migraines. Neck and shoulder problems. The fascia is an electrical system of connective tissue and having a tongue tie restricts the fascia through the whole body.
I’m getting my tongue tie release in my 30’s because no one diagnosed me until then!!!
If you know your baby has a tongue tie, the best thing you can do for them is get it Released as soon as possible.
If you don’t believe me, just go watch some adult tongue tie release stories and listen to these other people talk about how life changing this is. I wish my tongue tie was release as an infant.
