old trick is to take out #1 cylinder spark plug and stick a rod into the hole so that it rest on top of the piston. then turn the crank shaft till the piston is all the way up. that means the crank shaft is at top dead center (TDC). then turn the cam shaft pulley and set the marks. the cam pulley has 3 marks. 1 at the front 1 at the back and 1 at the top. make sure the marks at the front and back is on a straight line with the engine head. then slip your timing belt on without moving the pulley. and as you said put all the slack on the back so the tensioner will take it without moving the pulley. after all that. rotate the crank manually 4 times to make sure marks stay aligned and pistons not touching valves. rotate another 4 times to make sure. then it should be ok.

Just wanted to add in here for anyone that didn’t know when you go to check your time and marks you have to make two rotations if you do one your marks will be 180° off it’s a 2 to 1 ratio mean in the crank spins twice to every one revolution of the cam mean in spin in the crank 2 times is a whole revolution and if ur marks line back up after uve completed 2 revs of the crank u r good if not reset and retest till u get it lol

I have found TDC, but the "UP" symbol of the camshaft gear is facing down. How bad is this?

Hi Nathan,
I have a problem on my 2001 bmw e39 530d. When I close my trunk its suppose to retract and lock itself, but now I have to manually close the trunk with force. How do I fix retracting mechanism?

I have a 2002 civic lx 1.7L the belt broke. The cam pulley is very hard to turn, either way. I got the crank at TDC.... is that normal? I needed a new belt, tensioner ., crank sensor got sheared as well, and the lower cover got mangled. Before buying all these parts, how do I know if the valves got bent when the belt broke? The cam up arrow was at 3:00 position when the belt broke. car only has 115, 000 . Is there a why to find out if the valves got bent, because I cant return the parts after installed if the engine got

I love Honda timing belt jobs. done so many. easy money

That's not correct. You want all of the slack of the timing belt to the front because the tensioner takes the slack out if you put the slack to the back then once you turn the engine it's highly possible that it will jump time

I would like to see u remove your timing belt spin both gears then time it thats what I'm having problems match the lines u can say it 100 time I can do it to 100 times why does it not start😅

Thankyou this video is helpful! By the way, TDC marks are only for cylinder #1 right? Is it possible that TDC marks line up but cylinder #2 is at top dead center?

Hello everyone Don't forget to check the links in the description for civic head gaskets and timing components I personally hand picked on amazon, have a good day and thanks for watching !!!

Ok so. Troubleshoot this for me: 2002 civic - problem: blown head gasket - replaced head gasket, put the car in time wrong, fixed the timing belt to timing standards. Now it just turns over and over and over but wont start.

I have to use a floor jack on a dirt road. Should I be weary of doing this? Going to first jack the car up, put the car on a jack stand then lower it. Then put my floor jack with a block of wood on it to rest it slightly on the oil pan below the engine so that the engine does drop when I remove the engine mount and its bolts. How does this sound to you?

Two key points here folks:
1) Yes! It’s an interference engine. (Mess this job up and you can ruin that good ‘ole Honda reliability, real quick).
2) This engine spins COUNTER-CLOCKWISE. Remember that, when cranking the engine by hand, after you’re all done.

Good luck!

If it’s a d series wouldn’t you turn it 6 revolutions until the marks line up why clock wise you’ll damage the engine
