The best 1.7 timing belt change tutorial on youtube. Straight and to the point with excellent camera shots in some tight spots. Great Job.

I love when videos are this cLear-cut, to-the-point, with great effort on camera footage, and no extra distracting jokes/comments (+understandable language). Highly appreciated. You must have great service in-store, too. God bless

I just finished changing the timing belt on my 2005 civic while using this video as a guide. This video is great: high image quality, clear instructions and just the right length. Thanks for posting it!

You are told in the Timing Belt kit that you must turn crank counterclockwise to properly take up the slack. Going clockwise and improper belt tension will result in a violent correction of the tensioner and or spring and or belt. You just have to snug up the 19mm so that you can turn the engine without loosening the bolt. Make sure you get 2 10mm wrenches on the Alternator wire connector or you will snap the bolt and you'll be buying a new one like me. Yes you have to remove the valve cover to remove the top timing belt cover. That's the easiest part of the job!
It took me almost 8 hours to complete. I used an Impact for the tougher bolts and nuts. No problem getting my crank off. I had 150 psi on a 1/2" NapaPro impact driver. There was antisieze on the bolt so this was not the first Timing Belt on my 02 civic. Working without a hoist of course. I removed the upper PowerSteering Bracket as well. Don't forget there
are 5 14mm bolts on that big bracket.

*** START by disconnecting the battery!!!!*** Otherwise disconnecting the alternator will be disastrous.

If you are going to do this job, make sure to turn the engine over COUNTER clockwise. And it’s probably a good idea to disconnect negative battery cable so you don’t short anything out when removing alternator (be sure to have your factory radio code).

Just completed this job and the video was super helpful. I'm amazed by some of the shots they were able to get with so little room to work during some of the steps. I highly recommend this video as a reference.

Hi 1A, your videos have helped us on numerous occasions, so THANKS! In no way are we trying to discredit this video, because it is right on the money, with the exception that this engine rotates counter clockwise, so when rotating it to make sure the timing and belt tension is correct, you have to turn it counter clockwise, not clockwise..

Great video. A couple things I ran into, 1) Better to leave timing belt tensioner spring off until belt is on, then hook up spring. Otherwise I couldn't get belt on. 2) While torn down it's very simple to change crank shaft seal. Almost put mine back together, but was concerned about a bit of oil that was at bottom of timing belt cover, then realized likely that seal. When crankshaft pulley off and timing belt off, just slide the lower timing belt gear off the crank, slide off the giant washer with slots in it, and pry out old seal with screw driver without scratching sides. May also want to consider camshaft seal while apart. Just need camshaft locked before taking off top timing belt pulley.

I've watched a lot of how to videos. This one is by far the best step by step, best explanation, best narration, and best photography I've ever seen! I'll be buying my parts from you and checking in with you on my next project. Thanks guys, keep up the good work!

I just completed this timing belt and water pump job on my 03 Civic. Having access to this video is the only way I was successful in completing the job.

I did run into a substantial issue with the tensioner bolt being stripped. I had to use a Time-Sert kit to retread the bolt hole. I can say enough about how awesome that worked.

You guys are literally engine savers, thank you for the My wife is extremely happy as well!!!

This engine rotates counter clockwise, you didn't tension the belt. You put the most amount of slack possible on it. You will be lucky if it doesn't skip enough teeth to destroy every valve!

Other than that its a very informational video for people looking to brush up.

Man this really saved my life I’m kinda new to the car fixing world and I have a civic that overheats. Me and my dad couldn’t figure out the problem till we realized it was the pump. Great tutorial.

The best tutorial video I've seen in a long time. I just picked up a 2001 project civic, only for the purpose of teaching myself the ins and outs of motors. It only needs a head gasket but I'll do the timing belt and water pump while I'm at it. Thanks again! I'm about to start the search for a head gasket change video.
