Who Are The Bengali People?

Bengal, home of the Bengali people.

One half, eastern Bengal makes up the country of Bangladesh literally Land of the Bengali. The other half makes up the state of West Bengal and parts of Tripura and Assam in India.

Divided by borders since 1947 Bengalis still share a common history, food, culture, and language that they are immensely proud of and have died to protect.

There are roughly 300 million Bengalis worldwide, making them the world’s 3rd largest ethno-lingustic group.

About 283 million of them live in Bengal, a small area of just 239,000km2. Just 1 half of Bengal, Bangladesh is the 11th most densely populated country on Earth and every country above it is a microstate. There are more Bengalis in this spot than there are people in all of Russia, Brazil, or Mexico.

Bengal is a thriving hub of people and culture, with a history stretching over millennia and across oceans, filled with daring conquests, magnificent architecture, and delicious food. In what was once the richest country in the world. Join me as we figure out who are the Bengalis, why is Bengal separated, and what exactly is a duckupine?

Well, let’s find out!

MORE ON LIFETIME MEMBERSHIPS:
For the month of September Nebula is offering a lifetime membership deal. The deal is you pay $300 once and get access to Nebula forever, no matter what, no takesy backsies. This isn’t the most economical deal, the annual subscription for $30 a year is. So if you want the best deal I’d go with that. This deal is for those of you that want to support creators and what we’re trying to achieve with Nebula. We want to make a platform that is creator owned, with Original smart highly produced content. We want to build a platform that isn’t about generating clicks no matter what.

Recently Nebula has been laser focussing on Nebula Original, highly produced content that’s only on Nebula and would normally be beyond the budget for normal creators to make. Lifetime memberships are a great way to fund those projects right now. Nebula already has a healthy amount of monthly and yearly subscribers which means as a platform we don’t need to take on any outside funding or answer to predatory investors. Everything the platform makes goes into paying the creators, producing content, and improving the platform. Lifetime memberships are a way for us to get a lump sum without sacrificing Nebula’s independence.

The Originals that have been created so far are already impressive, so I’m really looking forward to seeing what is possible with a bigger budget and even though I haven’t produced an Original yet, the possibilities they present are incredible and I have a ton of topics I know could only work as Nebula Originals.

We’re also significantly improving the quality of the Nebula app. For example, we just added support for LG TVs and Roku this year.
When you sign up for a lifetime membership, your payment get split 3 ways. First, part of your membership goes directly to the creator, me. Another amount goes towards fixing bugs and adding features to Nebula. And lastly it goes to funding Nebula Originals.

The money that makes these projects possible comes directly from the people who sign up to Nebula, our customers are the investors and so the platform answers to them and their desires rather than a boardroom.

No matter what choice you go with, I appreciate you watching!

Definitely was not expecting a 1hour long video about Bengali Culture. There isn’t many in-depth videos like this about Bengal on YouTube. Much appreciated Cognito

Thanks! Bengali people are resilient and your video is the proof of that. The video was very well researched and deserves bigger audience.

I am Bangladeshi and living in the US currently. when I tell people here where I am from, they still don’t know where Bangladesh is. This makes me sad considering the rich history we had.

I'm a Bangladeshi Buddhist from Chittagong. I moved to France at 13 yo with family.
While I appreciate all the opportunities that France provided me, I also missed Bangladesh. I felt robbed of a Bengali growing up experience, kind of a "nostalgic attachment" you can call it.
But I feel like this video explains why I felt that way better than I ever could put into words.
Thank you ❤️

As a Bengali (from West Bengal), it makes me sad to think how much turmoil my ancestors had to go through and how we were pulled down from the riches to rags. But we are growing again and we are growing fast. I hope one day both West Bengal and Bangladesh will hold high places in the world in terms of science, technology, arts and culture.

Taught me more about Bengal than I've ever been aware of as a British Bangladeshi - but it was so cool to recognise some of the names, events and food 💚❤️💚

You won't believe how many times during this video I've cried. Something about the rise and fall of our people gave me all kinds of emotions. Thank you for describing our culture and our people in your own unique way.

Just watched on Nebula! My wife and I, two of the most obnoxious proud Bengali bores you could imagine, who pride ourselves on knowing our history and culture, learnt so much. I am so blown away that you’ve managed such an expansive overview and I love all the attention to little details. Food! Football! Some innovative pronunciations too 😜 So many references! Like an academic thesis. I especially appreciated the medieval history, as well as detailed coverage of the horrors of Partition and the 1970s. My family were heavily involved with relief efforts after the cyclone and then the war, episodes that so few in the West know much about, with most coverage about Independence focusing on the Western border. At times it was a really hard watch, but you’ve done an amazing job. খুব ভালো, জয় বাংলা!

So grateful for this video. You did an amazing job! Being a Bangladeshi descent but brought up in another part of world, I have always been looking for well explained history videos about Bengalis. I found a lot of new facts through this video. Thank you!

Bangladeshi here 🇧🇩 I must congratulate you on your research. Excellent video, really enjoyed it. Bengal once had everything, and I hope our best days are ahead of us. I feel it in my heart that Mother Bengal will one day regain her lost glory....her culture, beauty and industrial prowess will once again inspire many around the globe. জয় বাংলা।

Tagore is the most well-known and beloved Indian writer in Korea because he expressed active solidarity with Koreans when Korea was under Japanese imperialist rule. His poem is taught in textbooks, and there is a bronze bust of him in Daehagro, the center of literature and theater (where Tagore's plays are often performed as well) and it's often decorated with fresh garlands. The founder/director of the Indian Museum fell in love with Indian and Bengal culture through her love of Tagore's works. I haven't read all of his works (please cut me some slack, there's just too many), just some poems and short stories and plays, but each time it amazes me how beautifully written and also perceptive and progressive (even by today's standards) they are. I enjoyed how the Netflix movie Bulbul included not only Bengali folklore, but also references to Tagore's works. I will definitely read Gora (and Rokeya Hossain's works!) after watching this video.
