- In 1947, India gained independence from British rule, and British India was divided into India and Pakistan.
- East Bengal, which had a Muslim majority, became a part of Pakistan, while West Bengal, which had a Hindu majority, became a part of India.
- The Bengali language, which had been banned by the British during colonial rule, became the official language of East Pakistan (later Bangladesh) and West Bengal.
- In 1971, East Pakistan declared independence from Pakistan and became the country of Bangladesh after a nine-month-long war with Pakistan.
- This war was one of the deadliest conflicts of the 20th century, with estimates of the death toll ranging from 300,000 to 3 million people.
- Despite the political division between West Bengal and Bangladesh, the two regions share many cultural and linguistic ties, and there is a vibrant exchange of ideas, music, and art between the two.

Bengal used to be the art centre of india, Rabindranath Tagore ji wrote national anthem for both india and Bangladesh, there used to be famous directors like Satyajit ray, Ritwik Ghatak, Mrinal Sen all hailing from Bengal, that is lost now

It was decided initially that whole Bengal would become East Pakistan part. But both the Congress & Hindu MahaSabha leaders rejected. But the Communists supported the claim of Muslim League.

Then Bengal's PM Suhrawardi in 1946 under the call of Jinnah gave the call of "Direct Action Day" to genocide ethnic bengali hindus to force Pakistan demand known as "Great Calcutta Killing" . Then a hero came named Gopal Patha and saved Kolkata & surrounding districts from going to Pakistan fighting & defeating Muz League's Mobs.
And then ShyamaPrasad Mukherjee single handedly fought to seperate Western Bengal and created West Bengal.

In Bangladesh our biggest Army regiment is still called East Bengal regiment. Our air force sometimes uses the word East Bengal Aviation.
