Are your joints talkative lately?

Joint noise while moving and exercising?

While this can seem concerning, it's not always dangerous - especially if you don't feel pain.

If you DO feel pain, consider finding an easier or different exercise. Sometimes our muscles are strong enough for a movement, but are joints are not. Of course, consult your doctor if concerned!

Anecdotally, I've never known an individual - however strong or healthy - not to occasionally have joint noise. However, this SEEMS to decrease as we get stronger in our full range of motion.

Warming up also seems to help!

Hope you're all doing well! Have a few videos and updates in the pipeline!

A lot of popping noises are caused by the movement of tiny gas bubbles in the synovial fluid of the joints. These build up naturally over time when the joint is immobile - hence why you sound like a packet of pop rocks when you eventually lift yourself off of the couch after a couple of hours of watching tv. Frequent exercising of the joints, with some mild exercise like yoga, or just walking, helps to prevent these from forming.

What you have to look out for when exercising - especially when your muscles are under tension, or your joints under heavy load from weights - are loud cracking, or crunching sounds. These can mean damage to the cartilage of the joint, or tearing of the ligament. They may not be associated with immediate pain, but you'd better believe there will be pain as soon as the inflammation sets in!

If you do hear really disturbing sounds, or feel sharp pain while exercising, stop what you're doing, carefully immobilise the joint, ice it to reduce the swelling & get to a hospital asap.

I'm 63. I used to be in pretty good shape but have found myself becoming more sedentary. I am determined to get better and recover some of my flexibility. I won't be 21 again, but I can always be better than I am.

My knees have popped (pain free) whenever I squat down my entire life. I find it hilarious when I pop my knees and everyone within a 5 ft radius looks back at me with horror.

I haven't been commenting lately because I've been super busy... at the gym! I finally went back because I got the clearance to do so! From being in pain everyday, all day, using a cane, and losing hope, to walking 8-12km/day, finally getting the clearance from 3 professionals (yes, I needed 3 okays, regular doc, sports therapist and physiotherapist to be sure I could take it on) and hiring an absolutely amazing personal trainer so I don't go overboard and hurt myself again. I'm so much happier being active and with the things that were wrong with me? Turns out, being physically active is the best thing for them, I just had to learn the proper way. 👌 I want to give a big thanks to you Hamilton, your videos have always been a huge encouragement to my recovery!

I haven’t seen your channel in awhile. I’m glad you’ve popped up again, I really enjoy them. You have such a sense of calm and judgement free about you, and it’s refreshing. ^^

The way you motivate is so encouraging and definitely makes you wanna work on movements and being functional instead of being just jacked. It’s a great change, fitness is about being healthy and a lifestyle.

You always give great general advice while being concise and simple with it. Not sure if you're a Physical Therapist or similar but I think you'd make a fantastic PT if you became one. This is coming from a Physical Therapist by the way :)

Damn this is relatable. And I was extra concerned because of past knee injuries.
